Bandula Wijerathne (born, 1946 in Galle, Sri Lanka) is a Sri Lankan inventor lives in USA, businessman, and diplomat. He also serves as a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Kotelawala Defense University and he is appointed as an Ambassador for Science Technology and Innovation for Sri Lanka. [1] [2] [3] In addition, Wijay is the current President of LeoMed LLC, a medical device company. [4] [5] [6] Wijay is an expert in innovative cardiovascular. [7]

Wijay has received Lifetime Achievement Award from Maithripala Sirisena, President of Sri Lanka in 2016; Vidya Jyothi award in 2017; and Ada Derana Sri Lankan Global Inventor of the Year in 2018. [8] [9]

Early life and education

Wijay was born in the southern city of Galle in Sri Lanka. His father, Benny Wijayarathna was a Principal and his mother Katherina Wijayarathna was the Head Mistress in a primary school. Wijay attended Mahinda College until he completed the Advanced Level examination. After finishing Advanced Level examination, Wijay attended [[]] on an Indian Government Cultural scholarship, India in 1967 to complete a degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1974, he received the Fulbright Scholarship to pursue higher studies at the University of Southern California, where he first completed a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and then a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Later, he completed his doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Southern California. [10]

Career

In 1984, he started his entrepreneurial career, Wijay along with Dr. Paolo Angelini of the Texas Heart Institute, developed the angioplasty balloon catheter system along with the coronary artery perfusion pump system to be used during angioplasty. [11]

In 1995, Bandula invented the "Nested Loop" vascular stent, used in treating stenotic arteries after balloon angioplasty. [12] [11]

Karapitiya Teaching Hospital located in Karapitiya, Galle is the largest Tertiary care centre in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1982 and is the main training facility for the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna. The hospital consists of 1,624 beds, 54 wards and several other units. It is the third largest tertiary care hospital in the country. Karapitiya Hospital meets the health needs of people in Southern Province and also provides services to the people of the surrounding areas. In 2024, it was proposed to be renamed as Galle National Hospital.

Sampath Amaratunge is the chairman of the University Grants Commission, Sri Lanka. He was appointed by the president on 2 January 2020, and assumed the role the following day. Gathsaurie Neelika Malavige is a Sri Lankan academic, university professor, researcher and scientist. She is the head as well as the professor at the Department of Immunology and Molecular Sciences of the Sri Jayawardenepura University, Faculty of Medical Sciences since 2020. She is a visiting lecturer at University of Oxford since 2008. She is married to Lasantha Malavige who is regarded as Sri Lanka's first sexologist.

Presidential elections will be held in Sri Lanka on 21 September 2024. Voters will elect a president for a 5-year term. Incumbent president Ranil Wickremesinghe is running for re-election as an independent candidate. This would make him the first incumbent president to run for re-election since Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2015. Other candidates include Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
