Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation or BTMC, [1] is a public corporation that owns and manages all government textile mills in Bangladesh and is located in Dhaka. [2] It manages 18 government owned textile factories. [3]

History

The corporation was established on 26 March 1972 through the nationalization of textile mills in Bangladesh. [4] [5] It owns Eagle Textile in Chittagong. [6] The Ministry for Textiles and Jute is responsible for running the corporation. [7] The corporation has the largest liability of any state owned enterprise in Bangladesh with 76.54 billion taka in loans. [8] Nearly 99% of its loans are in default. [9] Rangamati Textile Mill is also owned by the corporation. [10] It used to manage 86 government owned textile mills which has been reduced to the 18 today. [11] [3]

The mills were nationalised after the independence of Bangladesh in 1972. It was operated by the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation before being closed down in 2002.

Anwarul Iqbal was an adviser of 2007–2009 interim Caretaker Government of Bangladesh. He was appointed as Local Government and Rural Development Minister & Labour Minister of the Non-party Interim Caretaker Government of Bangladesh on 17 January 2007 and remained in that post until a new election was held two years later. Later he was given the charge of Jute & Textile Ministry. He had the responsibility to head three ministries of the government of Bangladesh. He served as the 25th Inspector General of Bangladesh Police. He went into voluntary retirement from the IGP post after he had been made officer on special duty and within few days he took charge as the Adviser of the Caretaker Government headed by Fakhruddin Ahmed during the State of Emergency in Bangladesh which was declared on 11 January 2007.

Akij also provides services in healthcare, information and communication technology. Its turnover in 2009 was 89 billion Taka.

The Ministry of Textiles and Jute is the Bangladeshi government ministry responsible for the promotion, development and regulation of the Bangladesh textile industry, the second largest in the world. The current minister is Golam Dastagir Gazi.

Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB) is a statutory corporation of Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, established on 1 October 1976 under No. 40 of Investment Corporation of Bangladesh Ordinance, 1976. It is mainly an investment bank operating in Bangladesh, established to accelerate the pace of industrialization and to develop a sound securities market in Bangladesh. Rangamati Medical College (RmMC) is a government medical school in Bangladesh, established in 2014. It is located in Rangamati. It takes 51 students every year. It offers 5 years course on Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery which is Directed under Chittagong Medical University of Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
