The Bar Harbor Club Open [1] was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1886 as the Bar Harbor Open. In 1899 it was rebranded as the Bar Harbor Invitation [2] It was first organised by the Bar Harbor Lawn Tennis Club, Bar Harbor, Maine, United States. The first tournament ran until 1914 then was discontinued. In 1926 the tournament was revived and in 1929 the event was moved to the new held at the Bar Harbor Club that ran until 1972.

History

The Bar Harbor Open tournament was a grass court tennis event established in 1886 by the Bar Harbor Lawn Tennis Club, [3] Bar Harbor, Maine, United States. Comptetitors in the men's tournament played for the Molesley Hall Challenge Cup. [4] [5] In 1903 the new Bar Harbor Swimming Club was constructed [6] and the tournament was moved to the clay tennis courts in the grounds of the club. [7] The first tournament was held annually until 1914 when it was discontinued. In 1926 a second tournament was revived, [8] that moved to the new Bar Harbor Club built by J. P. Morgan to replace the Bar Harbor Swimming Club in 1930. [9] The new venue consisted of nine tennis courts, [10] that event continued to be held through until 1972 when it was discontinued. [11]

Notes

The Bar Harbor Swimming Club and later Bar Harbor Club also staged the Maine State Championships. [12] In the 1920s also known as the International Maritime and Maine State Championships. [13]

The Droitwich Open Hard Courts also known as the Bio-Strath Droitwich Open Hard Courts or Bio-Strath Droitwich for sponsorship reasons was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1968. The tournament was organised by the Droitwich Spa Lawn Tennis Club, and played at the Brine Baths Park, Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, England. The tournament ran until 1974 then was discontinued.

The Auckland Championships or Auckland Tennis Championships and later known as the Auckland City Championships or Auckland Lawn Tennis Championships is a combined men's and women's open grass court tennis tournament established in 1886 and was first played on tennis courts at the Old Government House, Auckland, New Zealand. The first tournament ran until 1942 when it was discontinued. In 1954 a second event was revived that is still held today.

The County Dublin Championships also known as the County Dublin Open Tennis Championships is a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1882 as the County Dublin Tournament in Lucan, Dublin for one edition only. In 1887 the tournament was revived at Lansdowne Lawn Tennis Club until 1894 only. In 1908 it was revived for the second time at the Carrickmines Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, Carrickmines, Republic of Ireland where it is still played today.

The Englewoood Invitation was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1887 as the Englewood Open that was also known as the Bergen County Open played at the Englewood Field Club, Englewood, Bergen County, New Jersey, United States until 1970 when it was abolished.

The Westchester Invitation also known as the Westchester Bowl Invitation was a tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Westchester Lawn Tennis Club (Invitation) and first played at the Westchester Lawn Tennis Club, Harrison, Westchester County, New York, United States.

The Rockaway Hunting Club Invitation was an early men's tennis tournament founded in 1886 as the Rockaway Hunting Club Lawn Tennis Tournament and played at Lawrence, Nassau County, New York, United States until 1966.
