Barbara J. Wilson (born November 27, 1957) [1] [2] is an American academic who has served as the 22nd president of the University of Iowa since July 15, 2021. She previously was provost of the University of Illinois system. [3]

Early life and education

Wilson was born on November 27, 1957, in Appleton, Wisconsin. [1] She earned her bachelor's degree in 1979 studying journalism at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. [4] She went on to receive a master's degree in 1982 and a doctorate degree in communications in 1985 from the same university while working under the direction of Joanne Cantor. [5] [1]

Career

After receiving her doctorate degree in 1985, Wilson became an assistant professor at the University of Louisville where her research was focused on the developmental differences in children's cognitive and emotional reactions to mass media. [6] After three years at Louisville, Wilson left for a position at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1988 and remained there for 12 years. [7]

In 2014, Wilson was appointed dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. [8]

In 2015, Wilson was named acting chancellor for University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign while the campus searches for a replacement for outgoing chancellor Phyllis M. Wise. [9]

In 2016, Wilson was appointed executive vice president for the University of Illinois System. [10]

On July 15, 2021, Wilson was named the 22nd president of the University of Iowa. [11]

Joan Huber is an American sociologist and professor emeritus of sociology at Ohio State University. Huber served as the 79th president of the American Sociological Association in 1989. Huber taught at the University of Notre Dame from 1967 to 1971, eventually moving to Illinois, where she taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. While instructing numerous sociology courses at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, Huber served as the director of Women's Studies Program for two years (1978–1980), and then became the head of the Department of Sociology in 1979 until 1983. In 1984, Huber left Illinois for an opportunity at the Ohio State University, where she became the dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, coordinating dean of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences, and senior vice president for academic affairs and university provost. During her time, Huber was president of Sociologists for Women in Society from 1972 to 1974, the Midwest Sociological Society from 1979 to 1980, and the American Sociological Association from 1988 to 1989. Being highly recognized for her excellence, in 1985 Huber was given the Jessie Bernard Award by the American Sociological Association. Lucius Jefferson Barker was an American political scientist. He was the Edna Fischel Gellhorn Professor and chair of the political science department at Washington University in St. Louis, and then the William Bennett Munro Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. He was an influential scholar of constitutional law and civil liberties, as well as race and ethnic politics in the United States. He published works on civil liberties in the United States and systemic racism. He was also involved with several presidential campaigns, and he wrote books about the Jesse Jackson 1984 presidential campaign, for which he was a convention delegate.
