Barbara Stock Nielsen (December 2,1942 - September 3,2024) was an American politician who served as South Carolina Superintendent of Education,from 1991 to 1999. She was a member of the Republican Party.
Nielsen was the first woman elected in South Carolina to serve as State Superintendent of Education [1] and the second woman elected to statewide office. [2] [3] She served as the first Republican State Superintendent of Education. [4]
One of her significant contributions was the development of public charter schools. [5]
