Barnett Shoals is a ghost town in Oconee County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. [1] Variant names were "Barnetts Fort" and "Rutherford". [2]

History

Barnett Shoals had its start as a mill town, anchored by the Star Thread Mill. [3] The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Barnett Shoals as a town in 1915. [4] The town was officially dissolved in 1995. [3]

High Falls State Park is a 1,050-acre (4.2 km2) state park located near the city of Jackson in Monroe County, Georgia. It is the site of a prosperous 19th-century industrial center, which became a ghost town when it was bypassed by the railroad. The park contains the largest waterfall in middle Georgia and a 650-acre (2.6 km2) lake.

The town of Burton, Georgia now lies underwater, covered by Lake Burton. The town was located at the confluence of Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River in Rabun County, Georgia and was established in the first half of the 19th century as a result of the Georgia Gold Rush. The first discovery of gold in Rabun County was just north of Burton, at the confluence of Moccasin Creek and the Tallulah River. The town was named after Jeremiah Burton, who owned the post office and general store there. The Burton Post Office was established in 1875 and discontinued in 1916.

Blue Bluff is a cliff located in Union County, Georgia at the approximate midpoint of Locust Log Ridge. The elevation above the bluff is 4,106 feet. An overlook is accessible via the Arkaquah Trail. Blue Bluff is located east of Brasstown Bald in the Brasstown Wilderness.

Scull Shoals is a former rapids and community on the Oconee River in Greene County, Georgia. It is an example of sedimentation due to unsustainable agricultural practices. Although the rapids and community are buried in silt, some remains of buildings are still visible. A nearby prehistoric earthworks and an area used for forestry research also bear the name "Scull Shoals". All of these features are in Oconee National Forest.

The South River is a 63.5-mile-long (102.2 km) tributary of the Ocmulgee River in the U.S. state of Georgia. It originates in the city of East Point in Fulton County and eventually flows into Lake Jackson, joining the Yellow River and Alcovy River to form the Ocmulgee.
