The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club that plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's premier competition. Founded in 1872 in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon, the club participated in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1878 until 1896, when it joined seven other clubs in forming the breakaway Victorian Football League. He was an AFL premiership player with Richmond in 2019 and 2020, and in 2020 was named to the AFL's 22Under22 team, recognising the best young players in the league. He plays as a small defender, with the ability to directly defend small forwards, and rebound off the defensive 50. Baker is most commonly known for his extraordinary courage, as he is always willing to put his body on the line for his team.

The 1989 Victorian Football League finals series was the 93rd annual edition of the VFL/AFL final series, the Australian rules football tournament staged to determine the winner of the 1989 VFL Premiership season. The series ran over four weekends in September 1989, culminating with the 1989 VFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 30 September 1989.
