The first class of African-American students graduated from the district in May 1890. In 1964 African-American students became admitted to schools previously reserved for white children due to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. [2]

The district previously operated East Bedford School and Bedford County Training School for Negroes, the latter previously John McAdams High School and also Harris High School for Negroes. These schools were reserved for black students. In 1967 it merged into Shelbyville Central. [2]

In the Jim Crow period, circa 1930s to 1960s, the district had around 700 African-American students. [2]

Union Academy is a magnet middle school in Bartow, Florida. It dates to 1897 when it opened as an elementary school for African Americans. It was expanded to include a high school in 1923. The high school was merged into Summerlin Institute in 1969 following the desegregation era and its students became part of Bartow High School on the Summerlin campus. Bedford County Training School for Negroes, also known as John McAdams High School and Harris High School for Negroes, was a high school for African-American children in Shelbyville, Tennessee and a part of Bedford Public Schools.
Peabody Academy was established in 1880 in Troy, North Carolina, by the American Missionary Association (AMA) for the sole purpose of educating African Americans of Montgomery County, North Carolina. The Negro boarding school attracted students from all of the surrounding rural areas including towns now known as Biscoe, Mount Gilead, Candor, Pekin, Star, in addition to Troy, North Carolina. Peabody Academy was the only institution, at the time, that served the educational needs of African Americans.
