Berge Setrakian (born 14 April 1949, Beirut, Lebanon), is a lawyer and the current President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) since 2002.

Biography

Setrakian has a Master Degrees in French and Comparative Laws and after practicing law for some years in Beirut, joined the law firm of Whitman & Ransom in the 1970s and now practices law as a Partner with the firm DLA Piper. [1]

Setrakian has served the AGBU in various leadership positions for many years and was elected member of the Central Board of Directors in 1977, and was from 1992 Vice President and Secretary during the presidency of Louise Manoogian Simone.

He was recognized with an Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his work on behalf of the Armenian-American community.

The American University of Armenia (AUA) is a private, independent university in Yerevan, Armenia that is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission. As of 2015, it is the first and only U.S.-accredited institution in the former Soviet Union that provides undergraduate and graduate education.

The Armenians in Lebanon are Lebanese citizens of Armenian descent. There has been an Armenian presence in Lebanon for centuries. According to Minority Rights Group International, there are 156,000 Armenians in Lebanon, around 4% of the population. Prior to the Lebanese Civil War, the number was higher, but the community lost a portion of its population to emigration. After surviving the Armenian Genocide, and initially settling in shanty towns in Lebanon, the Armenian population gradually grew and expanded until Beirut became a center of Armenian culture. The Armenians became one of Lebanon’s most prominent and productive communities.

AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School is an Armenian-American private school located in Winnetka, Los Angeles, California, United States. Located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, it was founded in 1976 as Saint Peter-AGBU School near the corner of Louise Avenue and Sherman Way on the grounds of Saint Peter Armenian Apostolic Church.

Armenians in Cyprus

Armenians in Cyprus or Armenian-Cypriots are ethnic Armenians who live in Cyprus. They are a recognized minority with their own language, schools and churches. Despite the relatively small number of Armenians living in Cyprus, the Armenian-Cypriot community has had a significant impact upon the Armenian diaspora and Armenian people. During the Middle Ages, Cyprus had an extensive connection with the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, while the Ganchvor monastery had an important presence in Famagusta. During the Ottoman Era, the Virgin Mary church and the Magaravank were very prominent. Certain Armenian-Cypriots were or are very prominent on a Panarmenian or international level and the fact that, for nearly half a century, the survivors of the Armenian Genocide have co-operated and co-existed peacefully with the Turkish-Cypriots is perhaps a unique phenomenon across the Armenian Diaspora. The emigration of a large number of Armenian-Cypriots to the United Kingdom has virtually shaped today's British-Armenian community.

The Pan-Armenian Games are a multi-sport event, held between competitors from the Armenian diaspora and Armenia. They consist of various competitions in individual and team sports among the Armenian athletes. It takes place in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

Religion in Lebanon

Lebanon is an eastern Mediterranean country that is composed of mostly Muslims and Christians. The main two religions are Islam with 54.4% of the citizens and Christianity with 40.1% of the citizens. The Druze are about 5.2% of the citizens. The country has the most religiously diverse society of all states within the Middle East, comprising 18 recognized religious sects. But outside of Lebanon, Lebanese people are mostly Christians. It is also estimated that a large proportion of its population are refugees which affects statistics. The refugees mostly Syrian or Palestinian are predominately Sunni but also includes Christians and Shia.

Armenian Uruguayans

Armenian Uruguayans number around 15,000-20,000 of the population, making Uruguay to have one of the largest Armenian populations around the world. The Armenian community in Uruguay is one of the oldest communities in South America, with most of them residing in the capital Montevideo. The majority of Armenians in Uruguay are either third or fourth-generation descendants of the first wave of immigrants coming from the Ottoman Empire between the end of the 19th century and the Armenian Genocide.

Antranik SC is a Lebanese-Armenian multi-sports club most known for its professional basketball program. It is located in Antelias, Matn District, Lebanon. Vartkes Boghos Yeghiayan was an Armenian-American attorney specializing in international law. Yeghiayan is known for launching several lawsuits against insurance companies for insurance policies issued to Armenians in the early 20th century during the time of the Armenian Genocide.

Antranig Chalabian was a medical illustrator, cartographer and historian, an author of several volumes on Armenian history. He is best known for his biography of General Andranik Ozanyan.

Harout Chitilian

Harout Chitilian is a former city councillor from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, former chairman of the council, he held the position of vice president of the executive committee of Montreal city until his electoral defeat in November 2017. Originally elected as a member of Union Montreal, Chitilian sat as an independent councillor from December 2012 to August 2013, when he reaffiliated with the new Équipe Denis Coderre.
