Berit Marie Persdtr Eira was born 6 March 1968. [1] [2] She studied commerce and economics, receiving a 3-year bachelor's degree in reindeer husbandry. [3]
In 2014, Eira highlighted her opposition to the Norwegian government's reindeer husbandry policy, as she refused to accept the demand to reduce the herd flock despite the state's threats of coercive fines. [4]
In 2017, as the first representative from the Flyttsamelista, she became a member of the Sámi Parliament of Norway. This happened after the Sami election, when the four parties of the Norwegian Sámi Association, the Center Party, Åarjel-Saemiej Gielh, and the Flyttsamelista joined forces to create a 'majority government'. According to the agreement, Eira is in the council for the first two years of the parliamentary term, and Ellinor Jåma of Åarjel-Saemiej Gielh for the last two.
The Sámi are the traditionally Sámi-speaking Indigenous peoples inhabiting the region of Sápmi, which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and of the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The region of Sápmi was formerly known as Lapland, and the Sámi have historically been known in English as Lapps or Laplanders, but these terms are regarded as offensive by the Sámi, who prefer their own endonym, e.g. Northern Sámi Sápmi. Kautokeino is a municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino. Other villages include Láhpoluoppal and Máze.
Fosen is a traditional district in Trøndelag, consisting of the municipalities Osen, Roan, Åfjord, Ørland, Indre Fosen, Orkland, Heim, Hitra and Frøya. The district is dominated by forested valleys, lakes, coastal cliffs but also shallow areas, and in the interior mountains reaching up to 675 m elevation. The western coast has many skerries and some islands, such as Stokkøya in Åfjord. There are some good salmon rivers, and sea eagles and other sea birds are very common along the coast, notably on the shallow area near Ørland (Grandefjæra). The west coast has mild winters, and some locations receive on average more than 2,000 mm of precipitation per year. Part of the Scandinavian coastal conifer forests are located in the valleys of the peninsula, and smaller areas are classified as temperate rainforest with 67 nature reserves. The largest nature reserve is Øyenskavelen, with many nature types including undisturbed forest, some of it classified as rainforest.

The Sámi Grand Prix, often abbreviated as SGP, is a Sámi yoik and song competition organized annually by the Sámi Music Festival organization, featuring participants from all corners of Sápmi. While the majority of its participants have been from the Norwegian side of Sápmi, Sámi from the Swedish, Finnish, and Russian sides have been increasingly participating in recent years too.

Rawdna Carita Eira is a Norwegian and Sámi playwright and author. She grew up in Brønnøysund in Nordland county in Norway and trained to be a teacher. She has worked as a reindeer herder, stage manager and playwright associated with Beaivváš Sámi Theatre. She has written lyrics for her own songs and tunes by, among others, Mari Boine. Eira published a bilingual book in 2011, ruohta muzetbeallji ruohta/løp svartøre løp, which was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2012. She lives in Kautokeino Municipality.
Ellinor Marita Jåma is a Norwegian Sami politician, representing Åarjel-Saemiej Gielh in the Sami Parliament of Norway. She has been elected for two consecutive periods: 2009–13 and 2013–17. She is also active in the promotion of Sami culture and language.

Ellen Inga Brita Olavsdatter Hætta was a Norwegian Sami school principal and a politician representing the Norwegian Conservative Party. She was appointed a ministerial State Secretary serving Erna Solberg in October 2004. In 2010, she was appointed rector of the Sami Secondary School and Reindeer Herding School in Kautokeino. In June 2014, Thorhild Widvey, the Minister of Culture, appointed her to serve on the new board of NRK, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. She was the first Sami to hold such a position.
Ellen Aslaksdatter Skum was a Norwegian Sami reindeer herder from Kautokeino Municipality who took part in the 1852 Kautokeino uprising. Inspired by the preacher Lars Levi Laestadius who called for a pure lifestyle and abstinence from alcohol, she was a leading member of a group of Samis who killed the local merchant and the lensmann.
