Bernard Cohen (born 1933, London) is a British painter. He is regarded as one of the leading British abstract artists of his time. [1]

Biography

Bernard Cohen studied at Central Saint Martins School of Art in London between 1950-1951, followed by the Slade School of Art from 1954-1956. [2] In 1957 Cohen received the Boise Traveling Scholarship and together with the French Government Scholarship awarded to him in 1954, he was able to travel and work in France, Spain and Italy. [3] Following various teaching positions throughout the 60s and 70s at Ealing School of Art, the Slade, Chelsea College of Art & Design, the Royal College of Art and the University of New Mexico; in 1988 he was appointed Slade Professor and Director of the Slade School of Art, UCL, a position held until 2000. [4]

Cohen's first solo exhibition took place at Gimpel Fils, London in 1958. [5] His work has been exhibited widely as part of several international touring British Council exhibitions. [6] Other notable exhibitions include, Five Young British Artists, the 1966 Venice Biennale's British Pavilion show, a retrospective at the Hayward Gallery in 1972 titled Bernard Cohen, Paintings & Drawings 1959-1971 and a Spotlight Display at Tate Britain in 2018.

His work is held in the collections of the Tate Gallery, UK, Victoria & Albert Museum, UK, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), USA, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, DK, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, PT, the British Council, UK, and many more both nationally and internationally. [7]

Cohen currently lives and works in London and continues to exhibit his work widely with exhibitions in 2018 including, a Spotlight Display at Tate Britain (4 December 2017 - 4 June 2018) and a show alongside his son Nathan Cohen at Flowers Gallery, Bernard & Nathan Cohen: Two Journeys (16 March 2018 - 5 May 2018).

Sir Michael Craig-Martin is an Irish-born contemporary conceptual artist and painter. He is known for fostering and adopting the Young British Artists, many of whom he taught, and for his conceptual artwork, An Oak Tree. He is Emeritus Professor of Fine Art at Goldsmiths. His memoir and advice for the aspiring artist, On Being An Artist, was published by London-based publisher Art / Books in April 2015.

Roger Hilton English painter

Roger Hilton CBE (1911–1975) was a pioneer of abstract art in post-Second World War Britain. Often associated with the 'middle generation' of St Ives painters – Terry Frost, Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon & Bryan Wynter – he spent much of his career in London, where his work was deeply influenced by European avante-garde movements such as tachisme and CoBrA.

Victor Arthur James Willing was a British painter, noted for his original nude studies. He was a friend and colleague of many notable artists, including Elisabeth Frink, Michael Andrews and Francis Bacon. He was married to Portuguese feminist artist Paula Rego.

John Jeremy Kenrick Moon was a British abstract painter. He read law at the University of Cambridge and worked in advertising before becoming an artist in 1961. He lived and worked in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey between 1966 and 1973. He died following a motorcycle accident near Kingston in November 1973.

Keith Milow is a British artist. He grew up in Baldock, Hertfordshire, and lived in New York City (1980–2002) and Amsterdam (2002–2014), now lives in London. He is an abstract sculptor, painter and printmaker. His work has been characterised as architectural, monumental, procedural, enigmatic and poetical.

David Hepher British artist (born 1935)

David Hepher is a British artist, best known for his paintings of buildings, landscapes, especially tower blocks, including the Aylesbury Estate:

Alexander Mackenzie (1923–2002) was a British abstract artist, member of the St Ives School and educator. Mackenzie was born on 9 April 1923 in Liverpool and died in Penzance on 18 September 2002. He painted mainly in Cornwall, also making regular visits to Cumbria. He was married to Coralie Crockett, and the couple had three daughters

Agathe Sorel is a London-based artist of Hungarian descent, specializing in painting, sculpture, printmaking and livres d’artiste. She is a Member of the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, as well as a founding member of the Printmakers Council and was its Chairman in 1981-1983.
