Bernard George Teague, AO, was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria, in Australia, between 13 October 1987 and 15 February 2008.

Education

Teague was educated at De La Salle College, Malvern [ citation needed ] and then at the University of Melbourne, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1960 and a Bachelor of Laws with honours in 1962. [1]

Career

Teague was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 13 October 1987, the first solicitor (i.e., non-barrister) to be so appointed. Previously, he had been chief litigation solicitor for the Melbourne law firm, Corrs, and President of the Law Institute of Victoria. [2] He was created an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2009 Australia Day Honours [1] "for service to the law, particularly through leadership roles with the Law Institute of Victoria, the Parole Board of Victoria and Forensicare, to the judiciary through the development of innovative courtroom practices, and to the community." [3]

On 13 February 2009, Teague was appointed to head the Bushfires Royal Commission on the Black Saturday bushfires. [4]

In February 2014 he was appointed to head an inquiry into the Hazelwood coal mine fires, which resulted in a lengthy suppression effort while creating a major environmental hazard from the smoke which hung over the Latrobe Valley, particularly Morwell, for some four weeks. Public hearings into the fire began on 26 May 2014. [5]

Peter Louis Waller was an Australian jurist. He was particularly well known for his work in evidence, medical and criminal law. He was Sir Leo Cussen Professor of Law at Monash University from 1965 until 2000, and thereafter Emeritus Professor. From 1968 to 1970 he was the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Monash University. From 1982 to 1984 he was the Law Reform Commissioner of Victoria. In 1984 he was appointed the Chairman of the Law Reform Commission, and from 1986 to 1992 he served as a part-time Commissioner. He has also served as the chairman of a number of medical and legal organisations, including the Infertility Treatment Authority, International Humanitarian Law Committee of the Australian Red Cross Society, Ethics Committee of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, and the Appeals Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Professor Waller previously served as Visiting Professor and Research Fellow in several universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Israel.

Black Saturday bushfires Series of deadly bushfires throughout Victoria State, Australia in early 2009

The Black Saturday bushfires were a series of bushfires that either ignited or were already burning across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday, 7 February 2009, and were among Australia's all-time worst bushfire disasters. The fires occurred during extreme bushfire weather conditions and resulted in Australia's highest-ever loss of human life from a bushfire, with 173 fatalities. Many people were left homeless as a result.

The 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission is an Australian Royal Commission that concluded on 31 July 2010. It investigated the nature of circumstances surrounding the Black Saturday bushfires.

Thomas Frederick Bathurst,, is an English-Australian jurist. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales from 1 June 2011 and Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales from 1 February 2012.
