Bhangaar (English: Obsolete) is a 2023 documentary film directed by Sumira Roy. ^{[1] [2] [3]} It captures the incessant pursuit of death by an octogenerian couple - Irawati and Narayan Krishnaji Lavate in Mumbai, Maharashtra. ^[4] Uma da Cunha and Siddhant Sarin are the co-producers of the film. It got official selections at Dharamshala International Film Festival, International Documentary & Short Film Festival Kerala (IDSFFK) 2023, 4th Beyond Borders Feminist Film Festival 2023, 54th International Film Festival of India, Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024, True/False Film Festival 2024 and 2nd Eikhoigi Imphal International Film Festival. ^{[5] [6] [7] [8]}

Release

The film was screened on 29 September 2023 at C.D. Deshmukh Auditorium, India International Centre. ^{[9] [10]} A Bengaluru Premiere of the film was also held at Bengaluru International Centre on 10 February 2024. ^[11]

Reception

Sunil Bhandari of The Uncuts opined, "Bhangaar is a deeply-observed film examining the lives of Irawati and Narayan Lavate, as they live their angularities, memories, chores - and their extreme sense of uselessness." ^[12] Vaishakhi of Abacus Yellow observed, "Bhangaar slowly draws you into the world of the Lavates and slowly and painfully, day by day, month after month, season by season and even ironically, festival after festival celebrated, pulls you into a world of ennui laced with despair but also paradoxically, with righteousness." ^[13]
