Kano is a city in northern Nigeria and the capital of Kano State. It is the second largest city in Nigeria after Lagos, with over ten million citizens living within 449 km2 (173 sq mi). Located in the savanna, south of the Sahel, Kano is a major route of the trans-Saharan trade, having been a trade and human settlement for millennia. It is the traditional state of the Dabo dynasty who have ruled as emirs over the city-state since the 19th century. Kano Emirate Council is the current traditional institution inside the city boundaries of Kano, and under the authority of the Government of Kano State.
Kano State is one of the 36 states of Nigeria, located in the northern region of the country. According to the national census done in 2006, Kano State is the most populous state in Nigeria. The recent official estimates taken in 2016 by the National Bureau of Statistics found that Kano State was still the largest state by population in Nigeria. Created in 1967 out of the former Northern Region, Kano State borders on Katsina State to the northwest for about 210 km, Jigawa State to the northeast for 355 km, Bauchi State to the southeast for 131 km, and Kaduna State to the southwest for 255 km. The state's capital and largest city is the city of Kano, the second most populous city in Nigeria after Lagos. The incumbent governor of the state is Abba Kabir Yusuf. He was sworn in on 29 May 2023.

Muhammadu Sanusi II, ; born 31 July 1961), known by the religious title Khalifa Sanusi II, is the spiritual leader (khalifa) of the Tijanniyah Sufi order in Nigeria and the emir of the ancient city-state of Kano. He is a member of the Dabo dynasty and the grandson of Muhammadu Sanusi I. He succeeded his great-uncle Ado Bayero to the throne on 8 June 2014, assuming the regnal name Muhammadu Sanusi II. He spent most of his reign advocating for cultural reform in Northern Nigeria. In 2020, he was deposed by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and was succeeded by his cousin Aminu Ado Bayero. On 23 May 2024, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated him.
Ibrahim Dabo was the leader of the Fulani Sullubawa in Kano and founder of the eponymous Dabo dynasty. His progeny has lasted over two centuries reigning as Muslim rulers of the ancient city-state of Kano. The dynasty has become synonymous with the ancient city-state in affectionate sayings as "Kano ta Dabo Cigari". They have independently ruled the Kano Emirate from 1819 until the Battle of Kano in 1903 which as a result of British colonisation transformed into the Kano Emirate Council.
The Kano Emirate Council is a traditional state in Northern Nigeria with headquarters in the city of Kano, the capital of the modern Kano State. Preceded by the Emirate of Kano, the council was formed in 1903 after the British pacification of the Sokoto Caliphate. The borders of the Emirate are contiguous with Kano State.
Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is a Nigerian politician who served as the governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023. He previously served as Rabiu Kwankwaso's deputy governor twice, from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015. He is a member and national chairman of the ruling Party All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mal Aminu Ado Bayero, was the 15th Fulani Emir of Kano from the Fulani Sullubawa clan. He ascended the throne on 9 March 2020, following the deposition of his nephew Muhammad Sanusi II by Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. He is the chancellor of the University of Calabar.

Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero is the eldest son of Ado Bayero and the brother of dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero. He was the Chiroma of Kano from 1990 to 2015; and was titled Wambai of Kano by his brother.
Abba Kabir Yusuf is a Nigerian politician who has served as governor of Kano State since May 2023. He served as commissioner of Works, Housing and Transport when Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso was re-elected for a second term in the executive council of Kano State from 2011 to 2015.
Nasiru Ado Bayero, OFR is a Nigerian banker and businessman. He is the former Emir of Bichi, a Nigerian traditional state, Kano State, Nigeria. He ascended the throne from his brother Aminu Ado Bayero who was named as the Emir of Kano, following the deposition of his nephew Muhammad Sanusi II by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Prior to his accession, Bayero was the Chiroma of Kano Emirate and district head of Nassarawa during the reign of Muhammad Sanusi II.
Amina Adamu Aliyu is a Nigerian judge from Kano State She was born in Kano Municipal Local Government Area of Kano State. She pursued her Bachelor of Laws at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, graduating in 1986, and subsequently completed her legal training at the Nigerian Law School, being called to the bar in May 1989. Aliyu started her career as a state counsel in the Kano State Ministry of Justice in 1989, eventually rising to the position of Deputy Director Civil Litigation by 2009 when she became a High Court Judge. Notable cases include chairing the election petition tribunals in Kwara State in 2020 and Kebbi State in the 2019 Nigerian general election. Aliyu also presided over cases involving issues such as irregularities in the selection process of the Kano Emirate Throne and heinous crimes, delivering judgments that led to convictions and sentences.
The 2023 Kano State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Kano State, concurrent with elections to the Kano State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term. Abba Kabir Yusuf of New Nigerian People won the election.

Other federal elections, including elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate, were also held on the same date while state elections were held two weeks afterward on 11 March.

Rano Emirates was once part of the Kano Emirate, which was a Muslim state that emerged from the Fulani jihad in the early 19th century. Rano Emirates has had three ruling dynasties: the Kwararrafawa, the Habe, and the Fulani. The current emir of Rano Emirates is Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, who was appointed in 2020 after deceased of first emir of Rano Alhaji Tafida Abubakar Ila.
