William Livesey is an American professional baseball manager,scout,and front-office executive. He is a special adviser to the general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
A native of Brewster,Massachusetts,Livesey was a baseball,basketball,and soccer player at Orleans High School,where he graduated in 1958. [1] [2] He attended the University of Maine and played college baseball for the Maine Black Bears,graduating in 1962. [3] While being a student at Maine,Livesey played several summers with the Dennis Clippers of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). [4]
After college,Livesey taught and coached at Worcester Academy for four years,then took an assistant coaching job at his alma mater,Maine,under head coach Jack Butterfield,where he remained for two seasons. Livesey was head coach at Brown University from 1969 to 1971,Eckerd College from 1972 to 1977,and managed the Paintsville Yankees in 1979. [2]
During the summers of 1965 to 1972,Livesey also managed the CCBL's Falmouth Commodores. In his eight seasons with Falmouth,Livesey won five league championships,including four consecutive from 1968–1971. At Falmouth,he managed several future major leaguers,including Bill Almon,Mike Flanagan,and Paul Mitchell. Livesey returned to the CCBL to manage the Wareham Gatemen in 1976 and 1977,winning another CCBL title in 1976 with a team featuring future big-leaguer Joe Lefebvre. In 2002,Livesey was inducted into the CCBL Hall of Fame. [5]
Livesey was the Yankees' director of player development from 1980 to 1982. He then managed the Oneonta Yankees in 1983–1984. He served as the Yankees' scouting director from 1991 to 1996,where he was instrumental in assembling the "Core Four" that led New York to multiple World Series championships.[ citation needed ]
Livesey moved to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as director of player development in 1998 and special assistant to the GM from 1999 to 2001. He held the latter position with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003 and the New York Mets from 2004 to 2005. Livesey returned to the Yankees organization as a scout. [6] After the 2012 season,the Pittsburgh Pirates hired Livesey as a special adviser to general manager Neal Huntington. [7]
Livesey was inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2018, [2] and the Eckerd College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019. [8]
Livesey has two sons;Jeff,a major league coach, [9] and Steve,who has been with the Tampa Bay Rays since their inception currently serving as the Hitting Coordinator.
Harold Joseph "Pie" Traynor was an American third baseman,manager,scout and radio broadcaster in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played his entire career between 1920 and 1937 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Traynor batted over .300 ten times,posting a career average of .320,and had seven seasons with over 100 runs batted in (RBI). With home runs limited by playing in Forbes Field,the most difficult park for power hitting in the National League (NL),he compensated by reaching double digits in triples eleven times,leading the league in 1923. He batted .346 in the 1925 World Series to help the Pirates take their first championship in 16 years.

William Grady Little is an American former manager in Major League Baseball,currently working in the front office of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He managed the Boston Red Sox from 2002 to 2003 and the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006 to 2007. He was inducted into the Kinston,North Carolina,Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001,Charlotte Baseball Hall of Fame 1985 and was inducted into the Hagerstown Suns Hall of Fame on April 13,2009.
Stephen Charles Balboni is an American former Major League Baseball player,who played for the New York Yankees,Seattle Mariners,Kansas City Royals,and Texas Rangers. He was a player with home run power and a tendency to strike out. He was nicknamed "Bye Bye" because of his home run hitting prowess. He was also known by the nickname "Bones",which is a malapropism for Balboni. He is also known for the "Curse of the Balboni",an idea written about by Rany Jazayerli which said no baseball team with a player hitting more than 36 home runs for that team could win the World Series. Since Balboni was the last player to hit 36 home runs and win a World Series,,the curse bore his name. The curse ran from 1985 until Luis Gonzalez and the Arizona Diamondbacks won the 2001 World Series.
Robert Walden Schaefer is an American baseball executive. He is currently the special assistant to the general manager with the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball (MLB),and is a former interim manager,bench coach and farm system official.
William Charles Virdon was an American professional baseball outfielder,manager,and coach in Major League Baseball (MLB). Virdon played in MLB for the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 through 1965 and in 1968. He served as a coach for the Pirates and Houston Astros,and managed the Pirates,Astros,New York Yankees,and Montreal Expos.

Daniel Knowles MacFayden was an American starting and relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. From 1926 through 1943,he played for the Boston Red Sox (1926–1932),New York Yankees (1932–1934),Cincinnati Reds (1935),Boston Braves/Bees/Braves,Pittsburgh Pirates (1940) and Washington Senators (1941). In a 17-season career,he posted a 132–159 record with 797 strikeouts and a 3.96 earned run average in 2706 innings pitched. His best season was 1936,when he earned 17 victories with 86 strikeouts and a 2.87 ERA,all career bests.

John Beverley Gooch was an American professional baseball player,coach,minor league manager and scout. He played in Major League Baseball as a catcher from 1921 to 1933,most prominently for the Pittsburgh Pirates where he was a member of the 1925 World Series winning team. He also played for the Brooklyn Robins,Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox. After his playing career ended,Gooch continued to work as a baseball coach and minor league manager. In 1972,Gooch was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

John Butterfield was an American college baseball coach and professional baseball executive. Butterfield grew up in Westborough,Massachusetts and played college baseball for Maine in the early 1950s and later was the head coach at Maine and South Florida. In the late 1970s,he became an executive in the New York Yankees organization before he died in a car crash in November 1979.
Harvey Shapiro is an American college baseball coach,and former manager of the Netherlands national baseball team and the Bourne Braves. He was most recently head coach of the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2022.
