Bill Scher (born September 26, 1972) is an American pundit and liberal political analyst. He is the Politics Editor for the Washington Monthly. He also is a Contributing Editor to POLITICO Magazine, [1] and a contributor to RealClearPolitics. [2] He also co-hosts "The DMZ," an online TV show with conservative pundit Matt Lewis on YouTube. Scher is an alumnus of Oberlin College.

Early career

Bill Scher founded LiberalOasis.com in 2002.[ citation needed ] In 2004, he became a regular commentator for Air America Radio's The Majority Report hosted by Sam Seder and Janeane Garofalo.[ citation needed ] In 2006, he contributed a chapter to the book Proud To Be Liberal [3] and published his own book Wait! Don't Move To Canada!: A Stay-and-Fight Strategy to Win Back America (Rodale, 2006). [4] He later became an editor and writer for the Campaign for America's Future website OurFuture.org. [5]

Positions

Scher has been known to take positions that are controversial within liberal circles. In 2012, he published an op-ed in The New York Times titled "How Liberals Win" [6] which argued that liberals should treat "corporate power as a force to bargain with, not an enemy to vanquish". After the Edward Snowden leaks, he defended the record of the National Security Agency from a liberal perspective in essays for The Week [7] and POLITICO Magazine. [8] He defended his position in an appearance on MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell [9] and later in a debate with Snowden's attorney Ben Wizner on MSNBC's Up with Steve Kornacki . [10] He wrote articles critical of Bernie Sanders throughout the 2016 presidential primaries. [11] [12]

The program focuses on the discussion of current events and political affairs from a social democratic, democratic socialist and a progressive standpoint; to this end, comedy and satire are used from time to time to make key points. Originally airing on the Air America radio network, from March 2004 until July 2006 the show was co-hosted by Janeane Garofalo; Garofalo was reportedly originally asked by Air America to host the program and suggested Seder as a co-host.

In the 2016 presidential campaign, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders sought the Democratic Party's nomination in a field of six major candidates and was the runner up with 46% of the pledged delegates behind former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who won the contest with 54%. Sanders, the junior United States senator and former Representative from Vermont, began with an informal announcement on April 30, 2015, and a formal announcement that he planned to seek the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States on May 26, 2015, in Burlington, Vermont. Sanders had been considered a potential candidate for president since at least September 2014. Though he had previously run as an independent, he routinely caucused with the Democratic Party, as many of his views align with Democrats. The Democratic candidates in the 2016 United States presidential election hold a wide variety of stances on issues related to domestic and foreign policy and their political ideological views.

In October 2016, she was hired to be a Democratic strategist and political commentator by CNN. In April 2019, Symone Sanders joined the 2020 presidential campaign of former vice president Joe Biden as a senior advisor, and after Biden won election, was named chief spokesperson and a senior advisor for Vice President Kamala Harris. On December 2, 2021, Sanders announced that she would be resigning from her position by the end of 2021 to return to broadcasting, this time at MSNBC.
