The lexicon contains more than 22,000 short biographies on important or at least notable Dutch people born before 1910. The NNBW was compiled by several hundred historians and other experts. It is considered one of the most important reference works for Dutch history.

Guilliam or Willem van Nieulandt or van Nieuwelandt (1582/84–1635) was a Flemish painter, engraver, poet and playwright from Antwerp. He spent two thirds of his career in the Habsburg Netherlands and the remainder in Italy and the Dutch Republic. He is known for his Italianate landscape paintings and prints, often real or pastiche views of landscapes and buildings from in or around Rome enlivened by contemporary figures or biblical or mythological scenes. He is regarded as the principal poet and playwright active in the Habsburg Netherlands in the first three decades of the 17th century.

He is known for his genre scenes, portraits as well as his historical, religious and mythological paintings. He was first influenced by the Neoclassical style of Jacques-Louis David and later by the version of Romanticism that was in vogue in Belgium from the 1830s.
The Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts is an independent learned society of science and arts of the Flemish Community in Belgium. It is one of Belgium's numerous academies and traces its origin to 1772 when the Imperial and Royal Academy of Brussels was founded by empress Maria Theresia.
