Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) is a student organization formed on 15 November 2014 at Jawaharlal Nehru University on the anniversary of Birsa Munda's birth. [1] It claims to work for student rights and the issues affecting Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs and other minority groups. [2] BAPSA says it stands for assertion, [3] follows Ambedkarite ideology [4] and is critical of both left and right-wing forces on campus. [5] BAPSA is also active in Central University of Gujarat. Campus activities

Founded by members of the United Dalit Students’ Forum, [7] BAPSA conducts rallies [8] and protests, [9] as well as inviting students and teachers from the campus to talk about their issues. [7]

In 2017, BAPSA blocked the JNU administration building for 20 days in protest at a cut in the number of reserved seats and changes in the entrance criteria for graduate programs which they thought would make it difficult for marginalised applicants to gain admission to study. [10] In February 2018, BAPSA protested the Tata Institute of Social Sciences administration’s decision to withdraw financial aid to students from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Class communities. [11]

JNUSU elections

BAPSA has contested the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) polls since 2016. [7] The Hindu noted after the 2017 elections, where the BAPSA presidential candidate finished third, that the result showed "there was space for a party that did not subscribe to the Left-Right binary. With every election, the Ambedkarite forces have put up a better show basing their campaign on the 'unity of the oppressed' slogan." [12]

The 2017 elections to the JNUSU Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) were won by BAPSA's Magare Bhupali Vithal. The elections were not recognised by the university authorities and were held in protest at the administration's disbandment of the GSCASH. [13]

In the 2024 JNUSU election, BAPSA's Dalit queer [14] candidate Priyanshi Arya defeated ABVP's candidate and became the first Ambedkarite to win a seat in the central panel as the General Secretary. BAPSA's Megha Kumari won the councillor seat for SIS while BAPSA's Ramniwas Gurjar won the Councillor seat for CSLG. [15]

All India Students' Association (AISA) is a left wing student organisation in India. It describes itself as "the voice of the radical students' movement" and is affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation. The association was previously affiliated to the IPF. The association was founded in Allahabad on 9 August 1990 with the merger of several left wing students organisations across India. AISA have organisational presence in the states and union territories of Delhi, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, etc. Nilasis Bose is the National President of AISA and Prasenjeet Kumar is its National General Secretary.

Kanhaiya Kumar is an Indian political activist who served as the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union and leader of the All India Students Federation (AISF). He served as National Executive Council member of Communist Party of India. He joined Indian National Congress on 28 September 2021.

On 9 February 2016, some students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a protest on their campus against the capital punishment meted out to the 2001 Indian Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, and Kashmiri separatist Maqbool Bhat. The organizers of the event were former members of the Democratic Students' Union (DSU). The event was held despite the university administration withdrawing permission for the event shortly before it was due to begin, due to protests by members of the student union of ABVP. The event saw clashes between various student groups. A video was circulated by Indian news channel Zee news in which a small group of individuals, whom a later University investigation described as outsiders to the university wearing masks, shouted "anti-India" slogans.

Shehla Rashid Shora is an Indian single community human rights activist who has pursued her Ph.D. at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She was vice-president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) in 2015–16 and was a member of the All India Students Association (AISA). She rose to prominence whilst leading the student agitation calling for the release for Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others who were arrested on charges of sedition in February 2016 for participating and organizing sloganeering in JNU.

Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA) is a student organisation in India representing students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST), Other Backward Class (OBC), religious minorities and other oppressed communities. ASA works for the assertion of students from dalit and other marginalised communities.

On 5 January 2020, more than 50 masked people armed with rods, sticks and acid attacked the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and injured more than 39 students and teachers. Many students received serious injuries. Professors who tried to intervene and protect the students, as well as ambulances carrying injured individuals, were attacked. Eyewitnesses stated that police within the campus did not intervene to stop the mob. After attacking residents of the university campus for three hours, the mob escaped; none of its members was arrested or detained. All 36 students who were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS) were discharged within 24 hours.

Dipsita Dhar is an Indian politician and student activist. She is the All India Joint Secretary of Students' Federation of India. She was the CPI(M) candidate from Bally constituency for 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. She is contesting the 2024 Indian General Election as a CPI(M) candidate from the Serampore Lok Sabha constituency.

Left Unity is a group of left wing students' organisations in Jawaharlal Nehru University. It was formed with aim to counter the growing influence of right wing students organization like ABVP, a students front of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Left Unity predominantly consists of four major students organisations - AISF, AISA, SFI, and DSF. The panel of Left Unity has won the election of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union for four consecutive years.

Aparajitha Raja is an Indian politician who was the national leader of the All India Students’ Federation (AISF). She is currently serving as a National Council member of All India Youth Federation. She is the daughter of D. Raja, the Communist Party of India’s (CPI) General Secretary, and Annie Raja, the General Secretary of the National Federation of Indian Women.

Aishe Ghosh is an Indian politician and student activist. She is a former President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union and is a Member of the Students' Federation of India. She was also the CPI(M) candidate from Jamuria constituency for 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election and lost to Hareram Singh.

Priyanshi Arya is a student leader in New Delhi. In March 2024 elections, she won the Jawaharlal Nehru University student union (JNUSU) election for the post of General Secretary. She is the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association (BAPSA) candidate and was supported by the left coalition after their candidate Swati Singh's nomination was cancelled. She defeated Arjun Anand of ABVP by 926 votes. She received 2887 votes to Anand's 1961.
