BkMk Press is an independent literary press formerly affiliated with the University of Missouri-Kansas City, that publishes full-length collections of poetry, fiction, and essays. [1] Founded in 1971 by Dan Jaffe, it had been a part of UMKC's College of Arts and Sciences since 1983. In July 2021 the university separated BkMk Press and BkMk became an independent entity. The press has received funding and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Missouri Arts Council, the Swedish Institute in Stockholm, the Witter Bynner Foundation, and the Kansas City Institute for Trusts and Foundations. BkMk Press publishes on average six titles a year, [2] and sponsors two annual publication awards for the best submitted book-length manuscript in English: the John Ciardi Prize for Poetry, [10] and the G.S. Sharat Chandra Prize for Short Fiction. [11] [12]

It honors a living U.S. poet whose "lifetime accomplishments warrant extraordinary recognition"; its value is $100,000 making it one of the richest literary prizes in the world. The prize has been called "among the most prestigious awards that can be won by an American poet".
The Poets' Prize is awarded annually for the best book of verse published by a living American poet two years prior to the award year. The $3000 annual prize is donated by a committee of about 20 American poets, who each nominate two books and who also serve as judges. The Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York City hosts the annual awards reception in May, which includes readings by the winner and finalists. The founders of the prize were Robert McDowell, Frederick Morgan, and Louis Simpson. The current co-chairs of the prize committee are Robert Archambeau and Marc Vincenz.
