Black Josh is a rapper from Manchester, England. Since his first releases in 2013, Josh has worked with various producers and rappers across the UK including other Blah Records artists. He has also been part of the rap groups Cult of the Damned, Levelz and The Mouse Outfit. Writers have variously called him a "Manchester cult hero" and a "lyrical maverick". [1] [2]

Works and Style

Black Josh first started rapping over hip hop beats whilst at college sometime before 2011. [3] His first releases to gain traction came with The Mouse Outfit in 2013, [4] [5] followed by his Black Josh EP. [6] In 2014-15 Josh began to release on Blah Records, starting with the single Paul Scholes. [7] He has since dropped 8 releases on Blah. [8] They have included the 2018 albumYung Sweg Lawd, featuring production from Skepta, [9] and 2020's Mannyfornia. Reviewers praised Mannyfornia as "unapologetically Manchester" [10] and a "cohesive, dynamic and eclectic album.". [11]

In 2019, Josh's releases were selected for inclusion in the British Library's Sound and Moving Image Catalogue alongside other Blah artists. [12]

In 2024, he was the opener for Danny Brown's British leg of the "Quaranta" tour and was minted.

UK rap, also known as British hip hop or UK hip hop, is a genre of music, and a culture that covers a variety of styles of hip hop music made in the United Kingdom. It is generally classified as one of a number of styles of R&B/Hip-Hop. British hip hop can also be referred to as Brit-hop, a term coined and popularised mainly by British Vogue magazine and the BBC. British hip hop was originally influenced by the dub/toasting introduced to the United Kingdom by Jamaican migrants in the 1950s–70s, who eventually developed uniquely influenced rapping in order to match the rhythm of the ever-increasing pace and aggression of Jamaican-influenced dub in the UK. Toasting and soundsystem cultures were also influential in genres outside of hip hop that still included rapping – such as grime, jungle, and UK garage.

Christian J. Ward, known professionally as Hitmaka, is an American record producer and former rapper. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Ward was the first artist to sign with American rapper DMX's vanity label Bloodline Records in 2001, at the age of 14. Six years later, he signed with Epic Records and adopted the stage name Yung Berg. His 2007 debut single, "Sexy Lady" peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, while his guest appearance on Ray J's single, "Sexy Can I" and Ward's own follow-up single, "The Business" peaked at numbers three and 33 on the chart, respectively, the following year; all three of which preceded the release of his debut studio album, Look What You Made Me (2008). "You're Mines Still" is a song by American rapper Yung Bleu. It was released on October 2, 2020, as the third track from his EP Love Scars: The 5 Stages of Emotions. A remix featuring Canadian rapper Drake was released on October 16, 2020, as part of the deluxe version of the EP and was later included on his debut studio album Moon Boy (2021). The remix came about after basketball player DeMarcus Cousins reached out to both artists, urging them to collaborate. The soft, melodic song finds the two harmonizing about their ex-lovers who they still hold on to. An unofficial remix called "You're Not Mines Still" was made by Chloe Bailey, one half of the duo Chloe x Halle.

2000and4Eva is the debut mixtape by British rapper and singer-songwriter Bree Runway. It was released on 6 November 2020 via EMI Records and UMG, and was supported by the singles "Apeshit", "Damn Daniel", "Gucci", "Little Nokia" and "ATM". 2000and4Eva features guest appearances from Missy Elliott, Yung Baby Tate, Maliibu Miitch and Rico Nasty, as well as production from musicians such as EasyFun and Raf Riley, among others. Blah Records is a British hip hop and alternative hip hop record label owned and managed by Lee Scott and Salar Saajedi. It was founded by Lee Scott and producer Molotov in 2006, with label rapper Milkavelli also originally listed as a director. They originally started the label to release the music of their rap posse Children of the Damned. That group later evolved into Cult of the Damned, featuring many label artists.

Terrell Anthony Cox, known professionally as Cochise, is an American rapper, singer and record producer. He initially garnered attention after his 2019 single "Hatchback" rose to popularity on TikTok in 2020. His song "Tell Em" with fellow rapper Snot peaked at number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2021. Cochise has since released two studio albums, with his debut being Benbow Crescent in 2021.

Cult of the Damned is an English rap group, with a shifting line up of a dozen-plus rappers and producers including Lee Scott, Salar and Black Josh. Formerly known as Children of the Damned they have been releasing music since 2007's album Tourretes Camp, all through various incarnations of Blah Records.
