Blaina and District Hospital (Welsh : Ysbyty Blaina a'r Cylch) was a community hospital in Blaina, Blaenau Gwent, Wales. It was managed by the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
Welsh ; [kəmˈrɑːɨɡ](
A community hospital can be purely a nominal designation or have a more specific meaning. When specific, it refers to a hospital that is accessible to the general public, and provides a general or specific medical care which is usually short-term, in a cost-effective setting, and also focuses on preventing illnesses and not only treating them. The following countries have specified definitions for a community hospital:
Blaina is a small town, situated deep within the South Wales Valleys between Brynmawr and Abertillery in the unitary authority of Blaenau Gwent, ancient parish of Aberystruth, preserved county of Gwent and historic county of Monmouthshire. As of 2011, the town has a population of 4,808.
The site for the hospital was acquired from Octavius Price. [1] The hospital was designed by Gasenius Lewis and built by W A Linton. [1] The hospital, which was paid for from subscriptions by local mining communities, opened as the Nantyglo Hospital on 2 January 1911. [1] The maternity ward was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of York on 17 March 1932. [1] The hospital joined the National Health Service as the Blaina and District Hospital in 1948. [2]
George VI was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death on 6 February 1952. He became known as a symbol of British determination to win the Second World War against Germany.
Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon was the wife of King George VI and the mother of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. She was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from her husband's accession in 1936 until his death in 1952, after which she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter. She was the last Empress consort of India.
The National Health Service in the United Kingdom includes NHS England, NHS Scotland, NHS Wales, and the affiliated Health and Social Care (HSC) in Northern Ireland. They were established together in 1948 as one of the major social reforms following the Second World War. The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, apart from dental treatment and optical care. The English NHS also requires patients to pay prescription charges with a range of exemptions from these charges.
After services transferred to the Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan in Ebbw Vale it closed in 2010. [3] The building was subsequently demolished and the site cleared. [1]
