BlikBook is an online platform used in higher education to enable improved student engagement. [1] As of October 2013 is estimated to be used in more than a third of universities in the UK and all Irish universities. [2] Founded in 2010, [3] BlikBook is a platform which connects students and their lecturers in Higher Education based on what they are learning. [2] [4]

History

BlikBook was co-founded in 2010 [5] by Cheyne Tan, Barnaby Voss, Deepak Colluru and Ben Hall. [6] It emerged from a research project at London Business School (LBS) and University College London (UCL) which focused on how students learn and engage with content. The concept for BlikBook was developed whilst the founders were studying some difficult lecture material. Unable to get the answers to their questions without contacting a number of their peers and eventually the lecturer, they became motivated to create a more efficient process for students and lecturers to interact outside of the lecture theatre [6] . [7] In 2011, Rene Olivieri, former CEO of Blackwell Publishing, COO of Wiley Blackwell and current Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) board member, joined as Chairman of BlikBook. [6] BlikBook is a multinational business with offices in Dublin and London. It was founded in the UK, [8] but relocated its head office to Dublin in August 2013. [1] The move followed a €1 million funding round from mainly Irish investors, Leaf Investments, Delta Partners and Enterprise Ireland. [2] [9] This was the second round of investment for BlikBook, having received initial funding from investors, including Forward Investment Partners [8] and Rene Olivieri, in 2011.

Features

BlikBook provides students and lecturers with a platform for more efficient interaction outside of the lecture theatre. [5] BlikBook's design and features are aimed at maximising the engagement of students [10]

Service

BlikBook is a service [5] aimed at solving problems for the three prominent groups of the academic community – students, lecturers and universities. [7] BlikBook facilitates questions and discussion amongst the students and lecturers from specific modules. [15] BlikBook's philosophy is that by helping students to interact more with one another it will improve their educational experience and reduce lecturers’ workloads. This type of online learning can help lecturers to monitor the progression of students [14] and advise them when needed. The belief is that this then assists the university by increasing student satisfaction, student academic performance, lecturer teaching marks and freeing up academic resources.

When referred to with its abbreviation, "EdTech," it often refers to the industry of companies that create educational technology. In EdTech Inc.: Selling, Automating and Globalizing Higher Education in the Digital Age, Tanner Mirrlees and Shahid Alvi (2019) argue "EdTech is no exception to industry ownership and market rules" and "define the EdTech industries as all the privately owned companies currently involved in the financing, production and distribution of commercial hardware, software, cultural goods, services and platforms for the educational market with the goal of turning a profit. Many of these companies are US-based and rapidly expanding into educational markets across North America, and increasingly growing all over the world."

Pearson Education, known since 2011 as simply Pearson, is the educational publishing and services subsidiary of the international corporation Pearson plc. The subsidiary was formed in 1998, when Pearson plc acquired Simon & Schuster's educational business and combined it with Pearson's existing education company Addison-Wesley Longman. Pearson Education was restyled as simply Pearson in 2011. In 2016, the diversified parent corporation Pearson plc rebranded to focus entirely on education publishing and services, and as of 2023 Pearson Education is Pearson plc's main subsidiary.


Burton & South Derbyshire College (BSDC) is a general further education college and is situated in Burton upon Trent town centre. It attracts approximately 13,000 students from Burton and the surrounding towns and villages. It delivers a wide range of courses for all ages including 16- to 19-year-olds, adults into part-time study, employer training and higher education. Recently a 'university centre' has been developed within the college to enable students to study on franchised higher education courses, but is not in itself a university.

Ferdinand von Prondzynski is a German-born Irish citizen who was the former university leader in Ireland and Scotland, a lawyer and legal academic, a high-profile public commentator, and latterly a member of the clergy of the Scottish Episcopal Church (Anglican). Formerly the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland, he previously served as the second President of Dublin City University (DCU) in Ireland (2000-2010), and before that as a professor and dean at the University of Hull, and lecturer and Fellow at Trinity College Dublin.
