Robert Dennis Chapman (born 18 August 1946), also known as Sammy Chapman is a footballer who played as a defender in the Football League during the 1960s and 1970s, most notably with Nottingham Forest.
He made his debut for Forest in 1964 at the age of 17 years 5 months. At the time this made him the youngest ever Forest player. He made 422 senior appearances for the club and was club captain. He scored 23 Forest goals and was a regular starter even after the arrival of new manager Brian Clough during the 1974-75 season. [2] In 1977 Forest won promotion back to the top flight. That was his last season at Forest. [3]
He joined Notts County staying there for a year. [4] He next moved to Shrewsbury Town for his last two seasons of senior football. [3]
He moved to non-league Burton Albion before in July 1981 he joined Shepshed Charterhouse [5]
His son Robert has played cricket for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. [6]
Nottingham Forest Football Club, often referred to as Forest for short, is a professional football club based in West Bridgford, Nottingham, England. It was founded in 1865; the team have played their home games at the City Ground, on the south bank of the River Trent in Nottingham, since 1898. Brian Howard Clough was an English football player and manager, primarily known for his successes as a manager with Derby County and Nottingham Forest. He is one of four managers to have won the English league with two different clubs.
Notts County Football Club is a professional association football club based in Nottingham, England. The team compete in EFL League Two, the fourth level of the English football league system, as of the 2023–24 season. Founded on 28 November 1862, it is the oldest professional association football club in the world and predates the Football Association itself. The club became one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888. They are nicknamed the "Magpies" due to the black and white colour of their home strip, which inspired Italian club Juventus to adopt the colours for their kit in 1903. After playing at different home grounds during its first fifty years, including Trent Bridge, the club moved to Meadow Lane in 1910 and remains there. Herbert Chapman was an English football player and manager. Though he had an undistinguished playing career, he went on to become one of the most influential and successful managers in the early 20th century, before his sudden death in 1934. He is regarded as one of the game's greatest innovators.
Peter Withe is an English former football manager and striker who played between 1971 and 1990. At Nottingham Forest he won the Anglo-Scottish Cup and Second Division promotion in 1976–77, First Division and the Football League Cup in 1977–78, and the 1978 FA Charity Shield. Ian Bowyer is an English former footballer who played mostly as a midfielder, best known for many honours in his career at Nottingham Forest. At Nottingham Forest he won the 1977–78 Football League and 1977–78 Football League Cup. The following season he won the 1979 European Cup Final and 1978–79 Football League Cup. He was part of Forest's successful retaining of the European Cup the season after. Other honours at Forest included the 1976–77 Anglo-Scottish Cup, 1976 promotion from the English second tier to the top flight, the 1978 FA Charity Shield and the 1979 UEFA Super Cup. At all clubs, in the league alone he played 599 first team games scoring 102 goals in a playing career spanning four decades.
