It covers about 115 square miles (300 km2) and had a population of 542,107 as of the 2020 census, making it the fifth-most populous city in California, the most populous inland city in California, and the 34th-most populous city in the nation.

David Duke Carr is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback for 10 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Fresno State Bulldogs and was selected first overall by the Houston Texans in the 2002 NFL draft. Carr also played for the Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, and San Francisco 49ers. With the Giants, Carr was a member of the team that won Super Bowl XLVI over the New England Patriots. He currently serves as the offensive coordinator at Bakersfield Christian High School.
Lawrence Patrick Hill is an American football coach, former player, and broadcaster. He served as the head football coach at Fresno State from 1997 until his dismissal following the 2011 season. In 15 seasons as head coach as Fresno State, he led the Bulldogs to a record of 112–80, 11 bowl game appearances, and a share of the 1999 Western Athletic Conference title.

He served as the head coach at California State College at Hayward—now known as California State University, East Bay (1965), California State University, Fresno (1966–1972), San Jose State University (1973–1975), Michigan State University (1976–1979), and Arizona State University (1980–1984), compiling a career college football record of 129–84–7. From 1985 to 1988, Rogers was the head coach of Detroit Lions the National Football League (NFL), tallying a mark of 18–40. In 1991, served as head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL), coaching the Blue Bombers to a 9–9 record and an appearance in the East Final.

Ervin Wilfred "Sonny" Bishop is an American former professional football player who was an offensive lineman in the American Football League (AFL). He played college football for the Fresno State Bulldogs, and played professionally in the AFL for the Dallas Texans and the Oakland Raiders in 1963, and for the Houston Oilers from 1964 through 1969. Bishop was inducted into the Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
James Earl "J.D." Williams is an American football coach and former cornerback who is the cornerbacks coach for the Fresno State Bulldogs. He played college football at Fresno State and was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the 1990 NFL draft. Williams played in six NFL seasons, from 1990 to 1994 and 1996 for the Bills, Arizona Cardinals, and San Francisco 49ers.
James Joseph Sweeney was an American college football coach who was the head coach at Montana State University (1963–1967), Washington State University (1968–1975), and California State University, Fresno, compiling a career college football record of 201–153–4 (.567). Sweeney's 144 wins at Fresno State are the most in the program's history. He was also an assistant coach in the National Football League (NFL). He played in college as an end for the Portland Pilots.

Stanley Evans Borleske was an American football, basketball, and baseball player and coach. He served as the head football coach at North Dakota Agricultural College—now North Dakota State University and at Fresno State Teachers College—now California State University, Fresno (1929–1932), compiling a career college football head coaching record of 36–36–7. Borleske's 1930 Fresno State Bulldogs football team is one of only three in program history to complete a season undefeated. Borleske coached basketball at North Dakota Agricultural from 1919 to 1922 and at Fresno State from 1934 to 1939, tallying a mark of 75–75. He was also the head baseball coach at the two schools, from 1920 to 1921 and 1923 to 1924 at North Dakota Agricultural and from 1930 to 1941 at Fresno State, amassing a record of 99–58–1.

Born in East Palo Alto, California, Adams attended Palo Alto High School where he played football and basketball. He played two seasons of college football for the Fresno State Bulldogs and was named a second-team All-American in 2013 before being selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers.

Led by eighth-year head coach Jim Sweeney, Fresno State compiled an overall record of 11–0–1 with a mark of 7–0 in conference play, winning the PCAA title. The Bulldogs played their home games at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California.

In their third year head coach Cecil Coleman, the Bulldogs compiled a perfect 10–0 record, won the CCAA championship for the fourth consecutive year, and outscored opponents by a total of 256 to 119.
The 1949 Fresno State Bulldogs football team represented Fresno State College—now known as California State University, Fresno—as a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) during the 1949 college football season. The team was led by head coach Alvin Pierson in his second one-year stint in the position. He had previously been head coach in 1945. The Bulldogs played home games at Ratcliffe Stadium on the campus of Fresno City College in Fresno, California. They finished the season with a record of three wins and eight losses. The Bulldogs were outscored 156–344 for the season.
Fresno Football Club was an American professional soccer team based in Fresno, California. Founded in 2017, the team was a member of the USL Championship, a second-tier league in the American Soccer Pyramid. Their first game took place on March 17, 2018. The team folded on October 29, 2019, after the ownership group was unable to secure construction of a soccer-specific stadium. On December 19, 2019, team ownership announced that it was searching for a new location in California for the 2021 USL Championship season. On February 1, 2021, the team's franchise rights were transferred to Monterey Bay FC, an expansion USL Championship team based in Monterey County, California.
Matthew John Entz is an American college football coach who is the head football coach at California State University, Fresno, a position he has held since 2025. He also served as the head coach at North Dakota State University from 2019 to 2023. Entz took over from the departing Chris Klieman after Klieman led the 2018 North Dakota State Bison football team to the program's seventh NCAA Division I Football Championship in eight seasons. Entz was the defensive coordinator for the Bison from 2014 until his promotion following the 2018 season. He was the linebackers coach and assistant head coach for defense at the University of Southern California (USC) for the 2024 season.
