The Indianapolis Racers were a major league hockey team in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1974 to 1978. They competed in four full seasons before folding 25 games into the 1978–79 season. They played at Market Square Arena. They were the first professional team to secure Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.

Stoughton played nine seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Hartford Whalers and New York Rangers, which bookended three seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA) split among the Cincinnati Stingers, Indianapolis Racers and New England Whalers.
Edward Dario Mio is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) for the Indianapolis Racers and Edmonton Oilers between 1977 and 1979, and in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Oilers, New York Rangers, and Detroit Red Wings between 1979 and 1986.
Brian Kennedy Conacher is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player, coach, executive and broadcaster. Conacher played 155 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings between 1961 and 1972, winning the Stanley Cup with Toronto in 1967. He later played one season in the World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Ottawa Nationals in 1972–73. In the mid-1960s Conacher reinstated as an amateur player and joined the Canadian national team, playing at the 1964 Winter Olympics. He later served as a coach in the minor North American Hockey League, and general manager of both the Indianapolis Racers and Edmonton Oilers in the WHA. He was the manager of Maple Leaf Gardens until 1998. Conacher also held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
Steven George Andrascik is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey right winger. He played one game in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Rangers during the 1972 Stanley Cup playoffs, and 97 games in the World Hockey Association with the Indianapolis Racers, Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades, and Cincinnati Stingers from 1974 to 1976.
Gary George Inness was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender and teacher. He played 162 games in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Washington Capitals between 1973 and 1981, and 63 games in the World Hockey Association with the Indianapolis Racers from 1977 to 1978.
Bob Lamey is an American sportscaster, formerly the radio play-by-play announcer for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. Lamey had been "The Voice of the Colts" after the team moved to Indianapolis in 1984, except from 1992-94, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 2018.

Richard Henri Leduc is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played 130 games in the National Hockey League and 394 games in the World Hockey Association. He played for the Boston Bruins, Cleveland Crusaders, Cincinnati Stingers, Indianapolis Racers, and Quebec Nordiques between 1973 and 1980.
David Edward Fortier is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Association during the 1970s. Selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft, Fortier spent most of the next three seasons in the minor Central Hockey League, though he played one season with Toronto before joining the New York Islanders for two seasons, with his final NHL season with the Vancouver Canucks. He then moved to the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association, and spent a final season in the minor leagues before retiring in 1979.
The Indianapolis Checkers were a minor league professional ice hockey team from Indianapolis, Indiana. The Checkers' home arena was the Fairgrounds Coliseum from 1981 to 1985 and Market Square Arena from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1985 to 1987. The team originated in the Central Hockey League where they played from 1979 to 1984. The Checkers filled a void left by the departed Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association. Indianapolis won the Adams Cup as the CHL champions twice, in 1982 and 1983.
Ronald Walter Ingram was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman and coach. He played 114 games in the National Hockey League for the New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks, and Detroit Red Wings between 1956 and 1965. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1953 to 1970, was spent in various minor leagues. After his playing career Ingram worked as a coach in various leagues, including with the San Diego Mariners and Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association from 1975 to 1978.
Norman James Johnson was a Canadian professional ice hockey centre. He played eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Los Angeles Kings from 1964 to 1972. He went on to play three seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Minnesota Fighting Saints and Indianapolis Racers from 1972 to 1975.
