The American Football League (AFL) was a major professional American football league that operated for ten seasons from 1960 until 1970, when it merged with the older National Football League (NFL), and became the American Football Conference. The upstart AFL operated in direct competition with the more established NFL throughout its existence. It was more successful than earlier rivals to the NFL with the same name, the 1926, 1936 and 1940 leagues, and the later All-America Football Conference.

The 1972 NFL season was the 53rd regular season of the National Football League. The Miami Dolphins became the first NFL team to finish a championship season undefeated and untied when they beat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII. The Dolphins not only led the NFL in points scored, while their defense led the league in fewest points allowed, the roster also featured two running backs who gained 1,000 rushing yards in the same season.

The 1966 Miami Dolphins season was the team's inaugural year as an expansion franchise in the American Football League (AFL). The Dolphins were the first of two expansion teams in the AFL, founded by Minneapolis attorney-politician Joe Robbie and actor-comedian Danny Thomas. Future Harlem Globetrotters and Montreal Canadiens owner George N. Gillett, Jr. was a minority partner, and the team was led by head coach George Wilson. The franchise was granted in August 1965 for $7.5 million.
George William Neville Edmonds was an English professional footballer. He played as a centre forward for St Albans City, Watford, Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves), Fulham and Northfleet United. On three occasions he finished as Watford's top scorer, including in 1914–15 when they won the Southern League. He later played in the 1921 FA Cup final for Wolves.
Maurice Cook was an English professional association footballer, and also an amateur cricketer for Hertfordshire. Capable of playing in any outfield position, Cook spent the majority of his career as a centre forward. He was best known for his spells at Football League clubs Watford and Fulham. He also played for Berkhamsted Town and Reading, and finished his playing career with a season as player-coach of Banbury United, in the Southern League. In 1960, Cook scored the first ever goal in the Football League Cup.
James Duncan Bowie was a Scottish professional footballer who played as an inside forward in the Football League for Watford, Chelsea, Fulham and Brentford. After his retirement from football, he managed Trowbridge Town. As a player, Bowie was described as "a gifted, quicksilver inside forward".
Frederick Bunce, also known as Freddie or Frank Bunce was an English footballer. He played as a left winger in England and later South Africa. He briefly returned to England as a coach, but then emigrated to Australia, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Ian Michael Howfield is a former American football placekicker who played in the National Football League (NFL) and Arena Football League (AFL). Howfield, who played college football at the University of Tennessee, is the son of former NFL placekicker Bobby Howfield.
The Southern Professional Floodlit Cup was an association football competition played in the late 1950s, which involved clubs from London, South East England and a small number of teams from the Midlands. The competition started in the 1955–56 season with ten clubs competing and in its final season, 1959–60, the number of entrants had increased to 18. The inaugural competition was won by West Ham United with the other winners being Luton Town, Portsmouth, Arsenal and Coventry City. In 1960, the competition gave way to the Football League Cup which was open to clubs throughout the Football League.

David Joseph Jacobs is a former American football kicker and punter who played ten seasons. He spent time with the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL) before playing with the New Jersey Generals and Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League (USFL). Afterwards he played a season with the Syracuse Express of the minor Empire Football League (EFL), before returning to the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings (1986) and making a second stint with the Philadelphia Eagles (1987). He finished his ten-year career by spending a year with the New England Steamrollers of the Arena Football League (AFL) in 1988.
