The Boland 1911 Conventional Biplane was an American pioneering aircraft.

During the winter of 1911-1912, Frank Boland built a conventional pusher biplane. Boland built this aircraft to compare it with the tailless aircraft that he'd been building for the 3 previous years. [1]

Design and development

Frank Boland wanted to make sure that he fully understood the dynamics of a conventional biplane so, in the winter of 1911-12, he constructed an aircraft of his own design in Mineola, Long Island. This conventional pusher biplane had an interconnected forward and rear elevator. A movable rudder is mounted in the rear. Roll control was achieved using wing warping. Boland used this aircraft to contrast with the performance of his unorthodox tailless 'jibbed' biplane that he had completed the previous October. [1]

Boland flew this plane throughout the winter in the snowy fields of Mineola. The aircraft was designed for an axle and a pair of wheels, but they were never mounted. In the icy conditions, taking off and landing using just the skids was fine. [1]

This was the only conventional biplane constructed by Boland. After flying this aircraft through the winter, he disassembled the aircraft in the spring and returned to the development of his tailless aircraft. [1]

From Aeronautics magazine Feb 1912 issue describing the operation of the wing warping system illustrated to the right:

"The wings can be warped down by swinging the steering lever. As one side is warped down, the other side is free to bend up under the air pressure. The warping wires are normally taut and keep these ribs bent down to their regular curve. The curve is 21/3 inches deep, at 16 inches back. The front and rear beams are exactly the same height from the ground, the ribs going under the rear beam." [1]

Pusher configuration Aircraft propellers behind their engine

In an aircraft with a pusher configuration, the propeller(s) are mounted behind their respective engine(s). According to British aviation author Bill Gunston, a "pusher propeller" is one mounted behind the engine, so that the drive shaft is in compression in normal operation.

The 1911 Curtiss Model D was an early United States pusher aircraft with the engine and propeller behind the pilot's seat. It was among the first aircraft in the world to be built in any quantity, during an era of trial-and-error development and equally important parallel technical development in internal combustion engine technologies.

Dunne D.8

The Dunne D.8 of 1912 was a tailless swept wing biplane, designed by J. W. Dunne to have inherent stability. One example was supplied to RAE Farnborough. License-built Burgess-Dunne models were used by the US Signal Corps and United States Navy and the short-lived Canadian Aviation Corps. It was the latter's first and only warplane.

Dunne D.7

The Dunne D.7 was one of J. W. Dunne's swept wing tailless aircraft designed to have automatic stability, first flying in 1911. It was a single seat, single engined pusher monoplane developed from the unsuccessful D.6.

The Vickers E.F.B.1 'Destroyer' was an early British military aircraft prototype. Although not itself a success, the design was considered worth developing, and a series of similar aircraft were produced in prototype form, eventually leading to the Vickers F.B.5 "Gunbus", which saw widespread service during World War I.

The Starck AS-37 is a two-seat biplane with unconventional wing and propulsion layouts. It was designed in France in the 1970s; though three were built and more than twenty sets of plans sold for home building, no AS-37s are active in 2012.

Caudron Types M and N

The Caudron Type B was a 1911 development of the earliest Caudron type, the Caudron Type A, with a nacelle style fuselage and more powerful engine. Initially an equal span biplane, it was modified into a sesquiplane.

The Caudron Type C was a single seat French biplane, intended for military evaluation. Two were built in 1911.

Caudron Type D

The Caudron Type D was a French pre-World War I single seat, twin-boom tractor biplane, a close but slightly smaller relative of the two seat Caudron Type C. More than a dozen were completed, one exported to the United Kingdom, where they may also have been licence built, and three to China.

The Aeronautical Syndicate Limited (ASL) was one of the earliest aeroplane manufacturers. A British company, it was founded in 1909 by the investor Horatio Barber and engineers William Oke Manning and Howard T. Wright. Initially located in Battersea, London, the business soon relocated to Larkhill on Salisbury Plain. It later moved to the Aeronautical Syndicate Flying School, Hendon. The company closed in 1912.

Boland V-8 Aircraft Engine

The Boland V-8 was an aircraft engine that was developed by the Boland Brothers for use in their tailless aircraft. Between 1908 and 1914, four versions of this motor were produced ranging in power from 60 hp (45 kW) to 125 hp (93 kW). The Boland motors all used an unusual concentric overhead valve. This arrangement positioned the intake valve in the middle of the exhaust valve. These were actuated by a single push rod and rocker arm.
