Boris Stankovich (born 9 January 1980, in New Zealand), is a rugby union coach and former player who played for Leicester Tigers and Newport Gwent Dragons. He was most recently the scrum coach at Leicester where he spent the most of his career. [1]
While born in New Zealand, Stankovich was capped for England at under-19 and under-21 level.
Stankovich was educated at Kelston Boys High School, Auckland and played Rugby for the school's First XV alongside Peter Koloi and Vinnie "Kelston Smashing Machine" McClafferty . He was also Head boy in his final year at school. [2] He began his career playing for London Irish before moving to France where he won promotion with SC Albi to the Top 14 in 2006. Initially he played at hooker before moving to prop. [3]
He moved to Leicester Tigers in 2007 and made his debut against Bristol in the first match of the 2007/08 season. During his time at Leicester, the club have won three Premiership titles and the Anglo-Welsh Cup in 2012, [4] though he only featured in one of the victorious Premiership finals (2010). [5]
Stankovich returned to the club as an interim scrum coach for the 2016/2017 season, following the departure of Richard Cockerill from the Director of Rugby role. [6] He became the permanent scrum coach soon after and stayed until leaving in October 2020. [7]
In May 2014 Stankovich joined Newport Gwent Dragons. He was released in 2016.[ citation needed ]
Dragons RFC are one of the four professional rugby union regional teams in Wales. They are owned by the Welsh Rugby Union and play their home games at Rodney Parade, Newport. They play in the United Rugby Championship and the European Rugby Champions Cup/European Rugby Challenge Cup. Thomas Nicholas Youngs is a retired rugby union player who played as a hooker for Leicester Tigers and England. Between 2012–2015 he won 28 caps for England, including selection for the 2015 Rugby World Cup and was selected for the 2013 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia where he played in all three test matches. He played 215 times for Leicester between 2006 and 2021, winning the Premiership Rugby title in 2013, the same season that he was named as the league's Player of the season. Born in Beckenham, England, he qualified to play internationally for Canada through his Canadian mother. He won 8 caps in 2014 and 2015 before retiring from professional rugby at the end of the 2016 season aged 31.
