Brassy were an English rock/hip hop band, formed in 1994 in Manchester. The band was composed of Singer-guitarist Muffin Spencer, guitarist Stefan Gordon, bassist-backing singer Karen Frost and drummer Jonny Barrington (aka DJ Swett).

History

Muffin Spencer, younger sister of Jon Spencer (of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), at the age of 17 moved from New Hampshire to Manchester, England in 1986 [1] where she formed The Exuberants with David Walker and Stefan Gordon after placing an advert in Affleck's Palace. [2] They eventually enlisted drummer Jonny Barrington. They released the album Led The Way in 1992 via Native Records before splitting up. [3]

Spencer, Gordon and Barrington went on to form Brassy in 1994 and enlisted Karen Frost in 1995 after Spencer spotted her at a Hole gig at Manchester Academy on 30 April 1995 despite being unable to play at the time. Spencer stated that she had "gone to the gig with the sole intention of finding a female who could learn to play bass. We had lads in the group and I wanted another girl in there". [4] [5] The band signed to Costermonger and released 3 singles before signing to Wiiija. Complaining about their former label and changing musicial influences, Spencer stated that "there’s always been a hip-hop element to our music. It’s a matter of having a budget and being able to use tools and studios that you don’t really have when you’re on a label called Costermonger… I think they still exist". [6]

The band released their debut album Got It Made in 2000. [5] Their 2000 track "Play Some D" was re-released in 2003 after it was used in the 'Hellomoto' ad campaign by Motorola, [7] leading to renewed interest in the band, and the recording of a second album, Gettin Wise. Gettin Wise received a mixed response from critics, [8] [9] [10] and proved to be their final album, with the band members all finding themselves in debt after recording it. [3] The band members had to get day jobs, with Spencer and Frost moving to Manhattan, and Barrington and Gordon moving to London. Spencer worked in a coffee shop. [11]

The band's last tour was in the USA in October 2003 as part of the "Girlz Garage" tour. By this point Gordon and Frost had left the band, with session bass player Kai Custodio touring with the band. [12] [13]

Commenting in 2021 on the band, Spencer stated that "it was hard. We really cared about it, so we fought to do everything the way we thought it should be done. I think that intrinsically makes it harder to do. So, we didn't take it easy on ourselves and it was tough" and that "we were just broke, and it just got really hard. We went our separate ways because we just couldn't hack it anymore". When asked about a reunion, Spencer responded "Oh, I don't know. I'd play with the other three. But I'm not interested in playing with anybody else". [14]

In 2009, Spencer owned a coffee shop at Irving 71 Place in New York City and complained about customers expecting free internet stating that ""we have writers and so forth in here who already take up table space. We don't have room for that". [15]

In 2020, Stefan Gordon and Karen Frost along with Lol Hammond formed Are We Superheroes?. [16] [17]

The group consisted of Judah Bauer on guitar, backing vocals, harmonica and occasional lead vocals, Russell Simins on drums and Jon Spencer on vocals, guitar and theremin. Their musical style is largely rooted in rock and roll although it draws influences from punk, blues, garage, rockabilly, soul, noise rock, rhythm and blues and hip hop.

The Wondermints are an American rock band from Los Angeles that released four studio albums between 1995 and 2002. The main line-up consisted of Darian Sahanaja (keyboards); Nick Walusko, and Mike D'Amico (percussion). The band members are also known for serving as part of the backing band for Brian Wilson since 1999. Other contributors to the Wondermints have included Brian Kassan (bass), David Nolte (bass) and Probyn Gregory (various).

Gene was a British rock band that rose to prominence in the mid-1990s. Formed in 1993, they were categorized by the UK music press as a Britpop band and were often drawn comparisons to the Smiths because of their similarities to Morrissey in the demeanour and lyrical style of lead singer Martin Rossiter. Gene's music was influenced by the Jam, the Smiths, the Style Council and the Clash. The band split at the end of 2004.

Invincible is the second studio album released by English boy band Five. The album was released in the United Kingdom by RCA Records on 8 November 1999, and was later released in the United States on 16 May 2000. Four singles were released from Invincible, including the UK chart-toppers "Keep on Movin'" and "We Will Rock You". The album was executively produced by Simon Cowell and Richard "Biff" Stannard. The Muffins were an American Maryland-based progressive rock/avant-jazz group. They were formed in Washington, DC in the early 1970s and recorded four albums before disbanding in 1981. In 1998 the group reformed and recorded a further five albums and a DVD. The Muffins played at Symphony Space on Broadway in NYC with Marion Brown in 1979, and also performed at a number of festivals, starting with the ZU Manifestival in New York City in 1978, The Villa Celimontana festival in Rome, Italy in 2000, two appearances at Progday in 2001 and 2002, NEARfest in 2005, and the "Rock in Opposition" festival in France in 2009. In 2010, the Muffins headlined at Progday, making a third appearance at this long running festival.

So Solid Crew are a British UK garage and hip hop collective originating from Battersea, London, which achieved wide success in the early 2000s. The group consisted of many members, the most notable being Asher D, Lisa Maffia, Harvey and Romeo. So Solid have been credited for being pioneers in the UK music scene. By turning UK garage from a dancey-genre to one that was darker and more MC-oriented, and gaining mainstream success, they inspired London youth to experiment with their own darker sounds, leading to what would become known as grime music.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">All Saints (group)</span> British girl group

All Saints are a British girl group formed in London in 1993. They were founded as All Saints 1.9.7.5 by music manager Ron Tom. with members Melanie Blatt, Shaznay Lewis, and Simone Rainford. The group struggled to find commercial success upon being signed to ZTT Records and were dropped by the label shortly after Rainford left the group. In 1996, the group were joined by sisters Nicole and Natalie Appleton and signed to London Records under their shortened name.
