The Chesapeake Bayhawks were a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) professional men's field lacrosse team based in Annapolis, Maryland since 2010. They played in the greater Baltimore metro area beginning with the MLL's inaugural 2001 season, as the Baltimore Bayhawks from 2001–2006 and as the Washington Bayhawks from 2007–2009.
The New York Lizards, originally the Long Island Lizards, were a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) team based in Hempstead, New York, located on Long Island. They are original members of the MLL. They lost the league's inaugural game on June 7, 2001 to the Baltimore Bayhawks, 16–13.

Joseph Edward Beninati is the television play-by-play announcer for the National Hockey League's Washington Capitals. Along with color analyst Craig Laughlin and "Inside the Glass" reporter Alan May, he provides Capitals game coverage for NBC Sports Washington. Beninati has been with the Washington Capitals since 1994. During his years in broadcasting, he's done freelance announcing for ESPN, ESPNU, Westwood One, WFAN and was one of the prominent hockey voices on Versus. Throughout his career, Beninati has been awarded DC area Sportscaster of the year, along with claiming 15 Capital Emmy Awards. Occasionally he's heard as the play-by-play voice of Men and Women's Lacrosse on ESPNU and The Big Ten Network; along with the Chesapeake Bayhawks of the MLL on NBC Sports Washington. Before his time with NBC Sports and the Capitals, he covered the AHL system of the Boston Bruins for both the Maine Mariners and the Providence Bruins.
Andrew 'Buggs' Combs was a former American professional lacrosse player. He attended the University of Maryland, and played with the Chesapeake Bayhawks of the Major League Lacrosse. Combs is currently a head lacrosse coach for the API Diamondbacks Lacrosse Club in Gambrills, Maryland for Athletic Performance Incorporated. Combs was the Offensive Coordinator, under head coach Tony Seaman, for the Towson University Men's Lacrosse team.
Joshua S. Sims is an American former professional lacrosse player. He played in Major League Lacrosse through 2013 and last played box lacrosse in the National Lacrosse League with the Philadelphia Wings in 2010. He starred as a member of the Princeton Tigers men's lacrosse team from 1997 through 2000. He is a two-time NCAA champion, three-time MLL champion, and one-time NLL champion.
Peter Thomas Ricci is an American professional lacrosse player who plays for the Philadelphia Barrage of Major League Lacrosse. Ricci played four years for Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pennsylvania in 2005, after starring in football and lacrosse and running track. He finished his senior season at Loyola with a team leading 91 ground balls, and was the eleventh draft pick in the 2009 MLL Draft to the Chesapeake Bayhawks. After two seasons with the Bayhawks he was traded to the Boston Cannons in May 2011. He won consecutive championships in 2010 and 2011 with the Chesapeake Bayhawks and Boston Cannons respectively, attributing to the Cannons first Steinfeld Trophy in MLL history. He was also selected as an all-star in 2011 season. He was traded by the Boston Cannons to the Florida Launch in November 2013 along with Lee Coppersmith and the 12th overall draft prick in the 2014 draft for Brodie Merrill, Martin Cahill and the 37th overall draft pick in the 2014 draft. He signed a 2-year deal with the Florida Launch in January 2017. In February 2020 he was traded to the Philadelphia Barrage along with three draft picks in the 2020 MLL draft for Bryan Cole and Randy Staats.
Matt Abbott is a professional lacrosse player for Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club in the Premier Lacrosse League. He is a nine time MLL all star and the Bayhawks leader in career games played. Abbott played for the Bayhawks since graduating from Syracuse, where he played lacrosse for four years. He also works as a financial advisor and coaches for Colgate as a volunteer.
Peet Poillon is a professional lacrosse player who played for the Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse.
The 2010 Chesapeake Bayhawks season was the 10th season for the Chesapeake Bayhawks of the Major League Lacrosse, and their 1st season as Chesapeake. The Bayhawks won their 3rd Steinfeld Cup, despite entering the playoffs as the lowest seed.
Steele Stanwick is a lacrosse player who played his NCAA Division I career at the University of Virginia. He won the Tewaaraton Trophy and the Jack Turnbull Award.
Steven Brooks is a professional lacrosse player that retired from the Atlas LC (PLL) of Premier Lacrosse League in 2019. Brooks was the 6th overall draft pick in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the Chicago Machine. He played high school lacrosse for Libertyville High School in Libertyville, Illinois. He also attended a postgraduate year at Bridgton Academy. Brooks played college lacrosse at Syracuse University. In January 2020, Brooks was named assistant coach of the Atlas LC (PLL) in the professional lacrosse league PLL. He is the first ever PLL player turned coach in the league's history.
Kevin Cooper is a professional lacrosse player with the Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club of the Premier Lacrosse League. He played high school lacrosse for Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Maryland where he then committed to the University of Maryland. He is the Son of Christopher and Susanne Cooper. Older brother of fellow Terps Brian and Emily. Majored in Letters and Sciences. Cooper was drafted in the 2nd round by the Chesapeake Bayhawks before being traded to the Ohio Machine.
The 2016 Major League Lacrosse season was the 16th season of Major League Lacrosse. The season featured 9 teams after the addition of the Atlanta Blaze via expansion. It was the first season since 2008 that the league fielded more than eight teams. The defending champion New York Lizards are coming off their third Steinfeld Cup victory in franchise history and first since 2003 after defeating the Rochester Rattlers 15–12 August 8, 2015 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia. On August 20, the Denver Outlaws won their second Steinfeld Cup trophy in three years, coming back to defeat the Ohio Machine, 19–18.
The 2018 Chesapeake Bayhawks season was the eighteenth season for the Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse, and ninth using the Chesapeake moniker. The Bayhawks came into the year looking to improve upon their 7–7 finish in 2017 in which they finished sixth place in the league and missed out on the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. General manager Dave Cottle returned to the sidelines as head coach for the first time since 2015 after the Bayhawks and Brian Reese parted ways in September. In Cottle's first year back on the sidelines, the Bayhawks finished 9–5 and second place in the league. In their return to the postseason, the Bayhawks lost to the Denver Outlaws in the semifinal round, 13–12.
Myles Jones, is an American professional lacrosse player with Redwoods Lacrosse Club of the Premier Lacrosse League and the New York Riptide of the National Lacrosse League. He attended Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station, New York, completed a post-graduate year at Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut and played collegiate lacrosse at Duke University.
The 2019 Chesapeake Bayhawks season is the nineteenth season for the Bayhawks franchise of Major League Lacrosse, and tenth season using the 'Chesapeake' Bayhawks moniker. It is Dave Cottle's second season of his second tenure as head coach of the team. In 2018, Cottle led the Bayhawks to their first playoff appearance in five years.
The 2020 Major League Lacrosse season was the 20th season of Major League Lacrosse. Each of the six teams were slated to play a ten-game regular season starting on May 30, until the COVID-19 pandemic suspended the season. On July 2, the league announced teams would play a five-game regular season over the course of a quarantined week in Annapolis, Maryland at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the home of the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The regular season was scheduled to begin play on Saturday, July 18 with a four-team postseason the next weekend on July 25–26.
The MLL–PLL merger represented a unification of the two major professional outdoor lacrosse leagues in the United States at the time: Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL). Initial terms of the merger were released on the morning of December 16, 2020. The two leagues agreed to unite under the "Premier Lacrosse League" name and logo, operating as a tour-based model and removing the last of the hometown-based professional field lacrosse teams in the United States. The Boston Cannons would be the sole MLL team identity to play in the PLL for the 2021 season, rebranding as the Cannons Lacrosse Club.
