British Columbia Mainland Cricket League

Last updated

The British Columbia Mainland Cricket League (BCMCL) was founded in 1914 by seven founding member clubs. [1] It is a competitive cricket league and is known for its scenic cricket grounds, most notably Stanley Park. According to the league's president, Inamul Desai, the BCMCL is the second-largest cricket league in North America. [2]

Cricket Team sport played with bats and balls

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 20-metre (22-yard) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the wicket with the bat, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this and dismiss each player. Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground. When ten players have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the match's statistical information.

Cricket field grassy ground on which the game of cricket is played

A cricket field is a large grassy field on which the game of cricket is played. Although generally oval in shape, there is a wide variety within this: some are almost perfect circles, some elongated ovals and some entirely irregular shapes with little or no symmetry – but they will have entirely curved boundaries, almost without exception. There are no fixed dimensions for the field but its diameter usually varies between 450 feet (137 m) and 500 feet (150 m). Cricket is unusual among major sports in that there is no official rule for a fixed-shape ground for professional games. On most grounds, a rope demarcates the perimeter of the field and is known as the boundary. Within the boundary and generally as close to the centre as possible will be the square which is an area of carefully prepared grass upon which cricket pitches can be prepared and marked for matches.

Organization

In 2016, the league hosted 81 teams (including junior teams), which played 1100 games in the regular season, which lasts from the end of April to mid-September. [2] The teams are organized into nine divisions. [2] At the end of the season, playoffs against the top two teams in each division are held, in which teams compete to move up in the division. Teams that end the season at the bottom of their division are relegated to the lower level.
