The British Columbia Summer Swimming Association (BCSSA) is a competitive aquatics program in British Columbia, Canada. The organization offers competition in four disciplines: Speed Swimming, Water polo, Diving, and Synchronized Swimming. BCSSA celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. [1]
The summer season officially runs from May 1 to August 31 of each year; however, the competitive season is completed during the 3rd week in August with no competitions occurring following this date. During the off-season from September 1 to April 30, participation in each of the disciplines is limited on a weekly basis. [1]
The organization is composed of 58 teams from around the province of British Columbia, with one exception, as one team is located in Colville, Washington state.
For early season competitions and organizational administration, the province is divided into eight regions: Cariboo, Fraser South, Fraser Valley, Kootenay, Okanagan, Simon Fraser, Vancouver & District, and Vancouver Island. [1]
In total, BCSSA offers 59 swim clubs across 8 regions, 10 water polo clubs across 5 regions, 5 artistic clubs across 4 regions, and 2 diving clubs across 2 regions. Of the 61 total clubs only the North Van. Cruisers (Vancouver & District Region) and the Coquitlam Sharks (Simon Fraser Region) [2] offer all 4 of the aquatic disciplines that BCSSA provides.
The BCSSA holds an annual Provincial Championships during the third week of August every year. During the Provincial Championships athletes compete in all the aquatic disciplines that BCSSA offers. Only athletes that have qualified through their respective regional championship meet are eligible to compete at the Provincial Championship Meet. Locations for provincials are often rotated between three locations every three years. The Lower Mainland, The Interior, and Vancouver Island.
Meet Schedule
Each individual region in BCSSA self hosts their own annual Regional Championships during the first weekend of August for speed swimming. However, for the other three disciplines dates for the Regional Championships usually change annually. Athletes and/or teams must first compete and place within either placing standards or time standards to qualify for the BCSSA Provincial Championship Meet. For many athletes the Regional Championships is the final competition of their summer season.
Qualifying for the BCSSA Provincial Championships
Speed Swimming:Swimmers must place in the top 3 in finals for individual events. For relays, teams in the top 2 during regionals will qualify. The only exception is when a swimmer or a relay team manages to swim a provincial qualifying time (PQT). Any swimmers or relay team that manages to meet or better a PQT in a final event will automatically qualify for Provincials. All of these must happen at ones respective Regional Championship
Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard, usually while performing acrobatics. Diving is an internationally recognized sport that is part of the Olympic Games. In addition, unstructured and non-competitive diving is a recreational pastime.
World Aquatics, formerly known as FINA, is the international federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competitions in water sports. It is one of several international federations which administer a given sport or discipline for both the IOC and the international community. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Swim Ireland is the national governing body of swimming, diving, water polo, open water swimming and synchronised swimming in the island of Ireland. Competitors from Northern Ireland can opt to compete for British Swimming in international competitions, with the exception of the Commonwealth Games where they can compete for Northern Ireland.
LEN is the European governing body for aquatic sports affiliated to FINA — it is the Continental Association for Europe. It was formally organized in 1927 in Bologna, and since 2015 is headquartered in Nyon.
USA Swimming is the national governing body for competitive swimming in the United States. It is charged with selecting the United States Olympic Swimming team and any other teams that officially represent the United States, as well as the overall organization and operation of the sport within the country, in accordance with the Olympic and Amateur Sports Act. The 2007 World Aquatics Championships, or the XII FINA World Championships, were held in Melbourne, Australia from 17 March to 1 April 2007. The competition took place at three locations in central Melbourne: the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, St Kilda Beach, and Rod Laver Arena in a temporary pool christened the Susie O'Neill Pool.
The Northern Virginia Swimming League, or NVSL, is a summer swimming and a separate dive league in Northern Virginia in the United States. The NVSL is the largest summer swim league in the United States with 102 teams and over 17,000 athletes.
Cullen Andrew Jones is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist who specializes in freestyle sprint events. As part of the American team, he holds the world record in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won silver medals in the 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay and the 50-meter freestyle, as well as the gold in the 4 x 100-metre medley.
The 8th FINA World Championships or the 1998 World Aquatics Championships were held from 8 to 17 January 1998 in Perth, Western Australia. The championships features competition in all five of FINA's disciplines: Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Synchronised swimming and Open Water Swimming. The main venue for competition was Challenge Stadium, which hosted all disciplines save Open Water.
Caitlin Leverenz Smith is an American competition swimmer who specializes in breaststroke and medley events. She won the bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley event at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Metropolitan Swimming (MR) is the governing body for competitive swimming in the New York Metropolitan Area. It is an LSC member of USA Swimming and the Eastern Zone. Most of the athletes who compete in Metro-sponsored swim meets are youths under the age of 18. However, there are also opportunities for older members of the swimming community to compete.
Team New York Aquatics is a Masters level swim, water polo and diving team based in New York City to foster aquatic sports amongst gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender athletes and their heterosexual allies. TNYA has a membership of over 500 swimmers, divers, and water polo players. TNYA is recognized as the largest Masters level swim team in New York City and the largest LGBT swim team in the world.
Conor James Dwyer is a former American competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. He competed in freestyle and medley events, and won a gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. 4×200-meter freestyle relay team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. In total, he has won seventeen medals in major international competitions: nine gold, six silver, and two bronze spanning the Summer Olympics, the FINA World Championships, the Pan Pacific Championships, and the Pan American Games. Dwyer placed second at the 2016 US Olympic Swimming Trials in the 400m freestyle.

The SSA is also charged with selecting the Singapore Olympic Swimming team and any other teams that officially represent Singapore, as well as the overall organisation and operation of the sport within the country.
Swimming Canada is the Canadian national governing body for competitive swimming in the country. It was established in 1909, as the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association.
The 15th FINA World Swimming Championships were held from 16 to 21 December 2021 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was previously scheduled for 13 to 18 December but moved back three days on 24 February 2021. Originally scheduled to be held in 2020, the championships were pushed back one year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Competition took place in a 25-metre temporary pool installed at Etihad Arena.
The 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships were contested from March 17-20, 2021 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina at the 39th annual NCAA-sanctioned swim meet to determine the team and individual national champions of Division I women's collegiate swimming and diving in the United States.
The Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival was a FINA-organized international aquatics competition spanning the disciplines of open water swimming, diving, and high diving, which took place from 15 to 20 December 2021 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was held correspondent to the 2021 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. The festival was the first time competitions in the three disciplines are being conducted at the same time as and in conjunction with a FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. In addition to sporting competitions, an interactive village is being provided for festival attendees. Coverage of the aquatics festival on television and via online streaming was provided on six continents with news agencies including ESPN (Americas), SuperSport (Africa), and beIN Sports (Asia) providing international coverage of the high diving competitions.
Canada is scheduled to compete at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary from June 18th to July 3rd, 2022. Canadian athletes competed in all five disciplines held at the championships. Canada's team consisted of 76 athletes.
