The Brooklyn Nets are an American professional basketball team based in the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City. The Nets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team plays its home games at Barclays Center. They are one of two NBA teams located in New York City; the other is the New York Knicks. The team was established in 1967 as a charter franchise of the NBA's rival league, the American Basketball Association (ABA). They played in New Jersey as the New Jersey Americans during their first season, before moving to Long Island in 1968 and changing their name to the New York Nets. During this time, the Nets won two ABA championships. In 1976, the ABA merged with the NBA, and the Nets were absorbed into the NBA along with three other ABA teams.

The American Basketball League (ABL) was an early professional basketball league. During six seasons from 1925–26 to 1930–31, the ABL was the first attempt to create a major professional basketball league in the United States. Joseph Carr, who was, in 1925, the president of the recently founded, three year old National Football League, organized the ABL from nine of the best independent pro teams from the East and the Midwest. George Halas of the NFL Chicago Bears was the owner of the Chicago Bruins, and department store magnate Max Rosenblum, a part owner of the NFL's Cleveland Bulldogs, financed the Cleveland Rosenblums. Future NFL owner George Preston Marshall, the owner of a chain of laundries, was owner of the Washington Palace Five. Other teams were the Boston Whirlwinds, Brooklyn Arcadians, Buffalo Bisons, Detroit Pulaski Post Five, Fort Wayne Caseys, and Rochester Centrals. With the exception of 1927–28, the ABL season was divided into two halves, with the winner of the first half playing the winner of the second half for the championship. Five games into the 1926–27 season, the Original Celtics were admitted to replace the Brooklyn franchise, and won 32 of the remaining 37 games, then shifted to New York the following season.

Barclays Center is a multi-purpose indoor arena in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The arena is part of a $4.9 billion future business and residential complex now known as Pacific Park. The site is at Atlantic Avenue, next to the renamed Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center subway station on the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, R and W routes, as well as directly above the LIRR's Atlantic Terminal.
Joseph R. Brennan was an American professional basketball player. He is mostly known for his time with the Brooklyn Visitations, which he joined in 1919 and led to three ABL championships. After his playing career, he coached St. Francis College in Brooklyn for 7 seasons from 1941-1948. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975.
Sean Andrew Marks is a New Zealand-American former professional basketball player. He was the first New Zealand-born player to play in the NBA. He is currently the general manager of the Brooklyn Nets.
Roger William Brown was an American professional basketball player. Brown was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on September 8, 2013.
John J. O'Brien was an American basketball referee and administrator. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was involved in organizing several early professional basketball leagues. In 1925, he founded Metropolitan Basketball League, which featured Original Celtics. From 1928 to 1953 he was an executive with American Basketball League, serving as president and, later, as chairman of the board. He was enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor in 1961.

The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds men's basketball team represents Long Island University, located in Brooklyn, New York in NCAA Division I basketball competition. They play their home games at the Steinberg Wellness Center, formerly known as the Wellness, Recreation & Athletics Center, and are members of the Northeast Conference. Their current head coach is Derek Kellogg who was hired after his firing from Massachusetts in 2017. The 2017-18 season is his first as head coach. On March 12, 2013, the team achieved what was the greatest run in Northeast Conference history with a third straight NCAA Tournament bid.

The Blackbirds compete in NCAA Division I and are members of the Northeast Conference.
The St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers men's basketball program represents St. Francis College in intercollegiate men's basketball. The team is a member of the Division I Northeast Conference. The Terriers play on the Peter Aquilone Court at the Generoso Pope Athletic Complex located on the St. Francis College Brooklyn Heights campus. The Terriers have also hosted home games at Madison Square Garden and at the Barclays Center.
The Battle of Brooklyn is the rivalry between the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds, representing the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University, and St. Francis College Terriers. The Battle of Brooklyn is a fierce rivalry, particularly in men's college basketball, between the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds and St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers athletic teams. The intensity of the rivalry is augmented by the proximity of the two universities, located only one mile apart in Downtown Brooklyn. The name of the rivalry is in reference to the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Brooklyn.
The Steinberg Wellness Center, formally known as the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center (WRAC), is a 2,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Brooklyn, New York. It was built in 2006 and is home to the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds men's basketball team, LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds women's basketball team and women's volleyball team. The Blackbirds previously played their home games at the Schwartz Athletic Center. The Steinberg Wellness Center hosted the finals of the 2011 Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament. Following President David Steinberg's retirement in Spring 2013, the WRAC was renamed the Steinberg Wellness Center to honor his 27-year tenure as President.
The Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Northeast Conference. The tournament has been held every year since the 1981–82 season when the Northeast Conference was established. It is an eight-team single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. After the quarterfinals, the teams are shuffled so the highest remaining seed plays the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals. The tournament winner receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA basketball tournament.
The 2014–15 Brooklyn Nets season was the franchise's 48th season, its 39th season in the National Basketball Association (NBA), and its 3rd season playing in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The Nets finished the regular season with a 38–44 record, securing the 8th seed. In the playoffs, the met the top seeded Atlanta Hawks in the First Round, losing in six games. This would be the most recent playoff berth for the Brooklyn Nets as of the 2017–18 season.

Based in Nassau County, the team plays its home games at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The Nets became the twelfth D-League team to be owned by an NBA team.
