Its county seat is Marks. The county is named after John A. Quitman, Governor of Mississippi from 1835 to 1836 and from 1850 to 1851.

Stewart County High School, established in 1973, is located in Lumpkin, Georgia, United States. As of 2009, It serves the entirety of Stewart County, Georgia. In January 2018, the school merged into one complex with Stewart County Middle and Elementary School after renovations and the building of a new gymnasium were completed.
