Budjette Tan is a Filipino writer best known for writing the horror/crime komiks series Trese , co-creating it with comic book artist Kajo Baldisimo. [1] [2] His work Trese has won the Philippine National Book Award for Best Graphic Literature of the Year in 2009, 2011, 2012. [3] It has been adapted into an animated series by Netflix. [4] [5]

Trese

Inspiration for Trese

In 2005, Kajo Baldisimo challenges Budgette Tan to write a monthly comic book series as both wanted to make mark in the comic book scene. [6] The collaboration originally led to the creation a male character named Anton Trese, a detective that uses magic which is heavily influenced from characters in like Batman, John Constantine, Gill Grisham, Fox Mulder, Carl Kolchak. However, Tan felt that the tough guy persona is often used and that there are not a lot of strong female characters seen like Jenny Sparks , Miranda Zero , Jakita Wagner, and Motoko Kusanagi, thus this led to the creation of the main character Alexandra Trese. [6] [7] [8] Growing up in Manila became an inspiration for the setting of Trese , as Tan observed people's superstitions and beliefs such as the saying of 'tabi-tabi po' around a mound of dirt or hanging a garlic on a window to ward off aswangs outside. [9]

<i>Zsazsa Zaturnnah</i> Comics character

Zsazsa Zaturnnah is a fictional comic book superheroine created by Filipino illustrator and graphic designer Carlo Vergara. The character first appeared in the Filipino graphic novel, Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsazsa Zaturnnah, originally a self-published work in December 2002 consisting of two parts. It was later distributed and merged in a single volume by Visprint Inc.. The graphic novel won a National Book Award in 2003 given by the Manila Critics Circle. It was the 12th bestselling fiction book among Philippine publications in 2005 based on the records of National Book Store.

Anime-influenced animation is a type of non-Japanese work of animation that is noticeably similar to or inspired by anime. Generally, the term anime refers to a style of animation originating from Japan. As Japanese anime became increasingly popular, Western animation studios began implementing some visual stylizations typical in anime—such as exaggerated facial expressions, "super deformed" versions of characters, and white radical lines appearing on the screen when something shocking happens or when someone screams, etc.

He was an important figure in the Philippine comics renaissance of the 1990s and early 2000s, and is known internationally for his graphic novels Wasted and Elmer, and for his inking on American superhero comics such as Wetworks, X-Men, Superman: Birthright, Wolverine, and Fantastic Four.

Philippine Comics have been popular throughout the nation from the 1920s to the present. Comics scholar John A. Lent posited that the Philippine comics tradition has "the strongest audience appeal, best-known cartooning geniuses, and most varied comics content" in Asia after Japan and Hong Kong.

Its first issue was published on October 22, 2005, starting off as a niche work which grew in popularity as readers were intrigued first by the first two volumes' focus on Manila's urban legends, and then by the later volumes' development of Alexandra Trese as a character. The series went on to win several accolades.

Dead End: Paranormal Park is an American animated fantasy horror comedy television series created by British author Hamish Steele for Netflix, which is based on the graphic novels series DeadEndia by Steele and Cartoon Hangover's Too Cool! Cartoons web short Dead End. Produced by Blink Industries, the series premiered on June 16, 2022. A second and final season premiered on October 13, 2022. On January 13, 2023, Steele announced that the series had been canceled.

<i>Trese</i> (TV series) 2021 animated television series

Trese is an anime-influenced television series based on the Filipino comic series of the same name by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo. An international co-production of Singapore and the United States, the series was released on June 10, 2021 on Netflix in the United States, which was followed by a global release the next day.
