Buki-Domino or Buki (German : Bukidomino, Buki-Domino, Booky-Domino, Buki or Sechser-Domino), is a gambling game that was widely played in Vienna in the early 20th century.
Buki-Domino is mentioned in the literature by Joseph Roth (Zipper und sein Vater), Egon Erwin Kisch ("Lederbranche" in Nachlese) and in the 15th chapter of the novel Zwischen neun und neun by Leo Perutz, which is entirely devoted to the precise description of a Buki partie.
The game was banned in early September 1916 by the Austrian government in § 522 öStGB. [1]
The Austrian word, Buki, is derived from English, 'bookie' (more rarely 'booky'), the abbreviation for 'bookmaker'. Around 1900, the English term 'bookmaker' was used in the German language in horse racing; only later did the Germanized term, Buchmacher, prevail. The connection with betting on horses is made clear in Perutz's novel, firstly in the sense that players are betting "as if on racehorses" and, secondly, Perutz has this episode take place in the "Café Turf" .
"Booky-Domino" or "Sechser-Domino" is cited in the list of games prohibited in Austria-Hungary. By contrast, according to Beck [2] Buki-Spiel with seven tiles per player is not considered a game of chance and is tolerated by the authorities.
This description below is based on Perutz's novel and the sources listed in the bibliography.
Four players play a game of "normal domino"; that is block domino for four people. Dominoes used to be played with 36 pieces in Austria: you took the 45 pieces of a double-eight set and removed the nine double ([0-0], [1-1] to [8-8]). [3] The tiles are shuffled face down by the gamemaster, the Buki or banker, each player receiving six tiles, the banker collecting his last. The remaining tiles form the Stamm and are not used in the course of the game.
The first hand of a partie begins with the player who has the heaviest tile, i.e. number [8–7], if it is not in the Stamm. After the first player, the other players each set a tile in turn; the game is played counter-clockwise. Anyone who cannot set must sit out; there is no 'buying'. The player who places all his tiles first is the winner. In a blocked game, i.e. when none of the four players can play, the player with the fewest pips in his hand wins.
Before each game, in addition to the participating players, the spectators, kiebitzers or 'gallerists' (Galleristen), can bet on one of the four active players or, according to Unger and Beck, on one of the three opponents of the banker. These bets with the Buki.
'Gallery' is a nickname for the Viennese underworld. The name is derived from police photo files that were known as the gallery; the criminals portrayed within it were called gallerists. [4] (c.f. Stoß)
The winner of a game has the lead in the next game (i.e., he may place the first tile); he must place his bet before playing the first tile. The other players may – according to Beck – hold their bets until it is their third turn to play or – according to Unger – may make bets as long as they still have at least five tiles.
If the player you bet on wins, you get triple your money from the Buki. As Perutz's description clearly shows, this means odds of 2 : 1: After Stanislaus Demba, the main character in the novel, has bet 10 kroner and won, he now has 30 kroner and so his profit is only 20 kroner. So then he leaves his stakes and winnings in place – he bets "money on money" – and wins again, which increases his fortune to 90 kroner. After another win, he has 270 kroner and is then cheated by the Buki for the win and the original stake.
Since the Buki only pays odds of 2 : 1 instead of the fair odds of 3 : 1 in the event of a win, he wins an average of 25% of the bets made (house advantage). Beck gives odds of 2½ : 1, the house advantage is then 12.5 percent.
With these calculations, the – very unrealistic – requirement applies that a player risks the same stake in every single game – regardless of whether they are allowed to place the first tile or not. If the players do not have to place all of their bets before picking up the tiles, this improves their chances considerably.
The ratio between the minimum and maximum stake is decisive to the players' chances, with a ratio of 3: 1 between maximum and minimum as appropriate. [3] A small ratio between minimum and maximum favours the banker, a large ratio shifts the advantage in favour of the opponent.
Dominoes is a family of tile-based games played with gaming pieces, commonly known as dominoes. Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of spots or is blank. The backs of the tiles in a set are indistinguishable, either blank or having some common design. The gaming pieces make up a domino set, sometimes called a deck or pack. The traditional European domino set consists of 28 tiles, also known as pieces, bones, men, cards or just dominoes, featuring all combinations of spot counts between zero and six. A domino set is a generic gaming device, similar to playing cards or dice, in that a variety of games can be played with a set.
Pai gow is a Chinese gambling game, played with a set of 32 Chinese dominoes. It is played in major casinos in China ; the United States ; Canada ; Australia; and, New Zealand.
Pai gow poker is a version of pai gow that is played with playing cards, instead of traditional pai gow's Chinese dominoes. The game of pai gow poker was created in 1985 in the United States by Sam Torosian, owner of the Bell Card Club.
Tien Gow or Tin Kau is the name of Chinese gambling games played with either a pair of dice or a set of 32 Chinese dominoes. In these games, Heaven is the top rank of the civil suit, while Nine is the top rank of the military suit. The civil suit was originally called the Chinese (華) suit while the military suit was called the barbarian (夷) suit but this was changed during the Qing dynasty to avoid offending the ruling Manchus. The highly idiosyncratic and culture-specific suit-system of these games are likely the conceptual origin of suits, an idea which would later be used for playing cards. Play is counter-clockwise.
Odds provide a measure of the likelihood of a particular outcome. They are calculated as the ratio of the number of events that produce that outcome to the number that do not. Odds are commonly used in gambling and statistics.
Shut the box, also called Blitz, bakarat, Canoga, klackers, batten down the hatches, kingoball, trictrac, cut throat, fork your neighbor, and jackpot, is a game of dice for one or more players, commonly played in a group of two to four for stakes. Traditionally, a counting box is used with tiles numbered 1 to 9 where each can be covered with a hinged or sliding mechanism, though the game can be played with only a pair of dice, pen, and paper. Variations exist where the box has 10 or 12 tiles. Alternatively, dominoes can be used for the tiles - this also provides the option of using up to six dice if a Double 18 domino set is used. A deck of cards can also be used as tiles, and if so desired a complete conventional Western deck with the jokers can provide for the use of up to nine dice. As described below under Variants, the dominoes or cards can also be used in place of the dice if so desired.

42, also known as Texas 42, is a trick-taking game played with a standard set of double six dominoes. 42 is often referred to as the "national game of Texas". Tournaments are held in many towns, and the State Championship tournament is held annually in Hallettsville, Texas on the first Saturday of March each year. In 2011 it was designated the official State Domino Game of Texas.
Matador is a common game using a set of dominoes. While it is similar to many domino games which the object of the game the first to go out, it has a differing very unusual rule of combining pips instead of matching numbers. The game is played using a set of double-six dominoes because of its rules; with larger sets, one can slightly tweak the rules.
Bendomino is a tabletop strategy game similar to dominoes, created by Thierry Denoual and published by Blue Orange Games in 2007. It is a set of double-6 dominoes with a 120-degree curve. The main difference from dominoes is the curved shape of the pieces, which introduces a new level of strategy to the game. There is also a version of the game for younger players with pictures instead of numbers and symbols on the bendomino tiles.
Schnapsen or Schnapser is a trick-taking card game of the Bézique (Ace-Ten) family that is very popular in Bavaria and the territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Schnapsen is both of the point-trick and trick-and-draw subtypes.
Kingdomino is a 2016 board game for 2-4 players designed by Bruno Cathala and published by Blue Orange Games. In this 15-20 minute, family-oriented game, players build a five by five kingdom of oversized domino-like tiles, making sure as they place each tile that one of its sides connects to a matching terrain type already in play.
Neunzehnerrufen is an Austrian card game of the Tarock (tarot) family for four players. Under the name Taroky or Czech Taroky it is the national Tarock variant of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but - with certain variations – is also played in parts of the Austrian states of Upper Austria, Lower Austria and the Styria as well as in Poland south of the River Vistula.
Strohmandeln, also called Strohmandel, Strohmanntarock, Strohmanntarok, Zweiertarock, Strawman Tarock or Straw Man Tarock, is an old, two-hand card game from the Austrian branch of the Tarock family. It takes its name from the three-packet talon of four cards, the Strohmänner ("strawmen"), each player has at the start of the game. While the original game has been described as jejune, it was eventually superseded by an attractive successor which is both challenging and very exciting.
Illustrated Tarock or Illustrated Dreiertarock is an Austrian card game that has been described as the "queen" of all three-handed Tarock games played with the 54-card pack. It was thought by Mayr and Sedlaczek to be extinct but, in 2009 when the two Tarock authors were guests on an ORF radio programme, players from Vienna called in who confirmed they still played the game. It is sometimes called Point Tarock which, however, is a different, probably extinct, game, albeit a close cousin. Although it has "a reputation for being a little more convoluted than the others", Furr maintains that this is not so, but recommends that players become familiar with Tapp Tarock before attempting this game.
Viennese Rummy is a matching card game of the Rummy family for 2-6 people played in continental Europe.
Kosakeln ("Cossack") is a relatively recent, two-hand card game of the Austrian branch of the Tarock family. It is a two-handed version of the three-player game of Illustrated Tarock, itself an elaborate and challenging variant of Tapp Tarock.
Husarln ("Hussar") is a mid-20th century, three-hand card game of the Austrian branch of the Tarot family. It is a 42-card variant of Illustrated Tarock and appears to be a close Austrian relative of the 42-card Hungarian tarock card games. The game is dominated by the distribution of Tarocks, giving it a "brisk and energetic feel" that is reflected in its name. It is also known as Block Tarock, although that name was given to a quite different and older game.
