Burgess Park is a public park in Athlone, County Westmeath, Ireland. [1] [2] The park is located in the townland of Goldenisland (Kilmaine), on the banks of the River Shannon, which forms the border with County Roscommon. [3] [4] [5] [6]

The park contains a memorial garden, playground, walking trails and recreational areas. [7] [8] [9]

History

In December 2015, the park suffered flooding damage following Storm Frank, which saw the water levels of the River Shannon rise, causing flooding in several places along its banks. [10]

A memorial garden was planted in 2016, to celebrate the centenary of the Easter Rising.[ citation needed ]

On 28 May 2020, a protest organized by Gemma O'Doherty were held at the park. The protests were in response to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic lockdown, which protestors described as being 'unlawful. [11]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Westmeath Way</span>

The Westmeath Way is a long-distance trail in County Westmeath, Ireland. It is 100 kilometres long and begins in Kilbeggan and ends in Athlone. It is typically completed in two days. It is designated as a National Waymarked Trail by the National Trails Office of the Irish Sports Council and is managed by Westmeath County Council and the Westmeath Way Committee. The trail forms part of the Dublin-Galway Greenway, part of the route 2 of the EuroVelo European cycle network.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shannon Callows</span> Low lying areas between Athlone and Portumna, Ireland

The Shannon Callows are areas of flat land along the shores of the River Shannon. These areas lie between Athlone in County Westmeath, where the river flows out of Lough Ree, and Portumna in County Galway, where it enters Lough Derg, in central Ireland. The shallow grade of the river here results in occasional flooding of the Callows.

The Dublin–Galway Greenway is a partially completed 'coast-to-coast' greenway and partial rail trail, in Ireland, funded by the Department of Transport, which is due to become the western section of EuroVelo EV2, a cycle route from Galway, Ireland, crossing Europe and ending in Moscow, Russia. The 276 km route was planned to be completed by 2020. It is due to be the fourth greenway in Ireland, after the Great Southern Trail, the Great Western Greenway and the Waterford Greenway.
