Burns Road Ki Nilofer is a Pakistani television film written by Fasih Bari Khan and directed by S. Mazhar Moin. [1] It stars Faiza Hasan as the title role of Nilofer, a lower middle-class girl form Burns Road whose romantic ideals are shattered by a heartbreak. It also stars Hina Dilpazir, Nabeel Zafar and Abid Ali in supporting cast.
Nilofer Abrar lives with her parents and eight siblings in a small flat on Burns Road. She is eldest of all the siblings and has failed thrice in her Higher secondary examination. Her parents struggle to make ends meet, but she finds escape in her favorite soap operas on 'Sitaray Wala channel'. She's especially fascinated by the jewelry and clothes worn by the characters. One day, Nilofer meets Hamid, the cable operator, when he comes to fix their TV. They start talking, and Nilofer develops feelings for him. As Hamid visits her home to fix the TV, their relationship grows, but they keep it a secret. Nilofer's friend Fakhra shares her own story of being in a relationship with an older man who gives her expensive gifts. This influences Nilofer's ideas about love and relationships. Meanwhile, Nilofer's parents want her to marry her cousin Safdar, but she doesn't like him. When Nilofer goes on a date with Hamid, she eats a lot and talks only about her favorite TV shows, which bores Hamid. Soon, Nilofer's father catches her talking to Hamid and forbids her to leave the house. Despite this, Nilofer continues to communicate with Hamid through Fakhra. However, when her brother teases her, Nilofer lashes out, saying her parents don't care about their children after giving birth. Her father overhears this and decides to cut off the cable TV connection, thinking it's a bad influence on Nilofer. Without TV, Nilofer's life becomes dull. She misses the escape and fantasy that TV provided. Fakhra continues to visit Nilofer, bringing letters from Hamid. But when Hamid's letters stop coming, Nilofer asks Fakhra what's wrong. Fakhra says Hamid's mother is ill and he is in Sheikhupura for her care. However, she too soon stops visiting Nilofer altogether. After days of disconnection with Hamid, Nilofer decides to elope with him, only to discover the shocking truth when she reaches his house: Hamid has married her friend Fakhra. Fakhra returns Nilofer's mother's bangles, which were given to her by Nilofer's father, the same old man with whom Fakhra had an affair. Heartbroken, Nilofer returns home, devastated, and lies to her mother about finding the bangles under her bed. The next day, the family prepares for a relative's wedding. Nilofer declines to attend and instead requests a new cable operator. When the operator arrives, Nilofer feels a sense of déjà vu, remembering her first encounter with Hamid.
Ahmer Naqvi of Dawn described the telefilm as a beautifully penned play "suffused with savagely witty colloquialisms and devoid of overwrought melodramas", and appreciated the realistic portrayal of a middle-class family and the use of metaphor to critique the societal issues. [2]
