CISL Scuola is a trade union representing school teachers in Italy.

The union was founded in 1997, when the National Union of Elementary Schools merged with the National Middle School Union. Both unions had been part of the loose Italian Federation of Schools, Universities and Research, which dissolved. Like both its predecessors, the union affiliated to the Italian Confederation of Workers' Trade Unions. [1] [2]

In 1998, the union claimed 168,736 members, [1] and by 2006, this had grown to 211,246, making it the largest teachers' union in the country. [2]

In 1950, socialists and Christian democrats split forming UIL and CISL, and since then the CGIL has been influenced by the Italian Communist Party (PCI) and until recent years by its political heirs: the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS), the Democrats of the Left (DS) and currently the Democratic Party (PD).

The Italian Labour Union or UIL is a national trade union center in Italy. It was founded in 1950 as a socialist, social democratic, (republican) and laic split from the Italian General Confederation of Labour. It represents almost 2.2 million workers.

Secondary education in Italy lasts eight years and is divided in two stages: scuola secondaria di primo grado, also known as scuola media, corresponding to the ISCED 2011 Level 2, middle school and scuola secondaria di secondo grado, which corresponds to the ISCED 2011 Level 3, high school. The middle school lasts three years from the age of 11 to age 14, and the upper secondary from 14 to 19.
