CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux that is being developed for gaming on Linux, among other things. [1]
During development, special emphasis is placed on user-friendliness, performance, and security using pre-configured and optimized packages. In addition, an optimized Linux kernel is provided, as well as a kernel manager for individual settings. [2] [3] Furthermore, a hardware detection tool is included, as well as customizable installation options for various desktop environments. KDE Plasma is intended as the default environment. Other features include the included introductory software CachyOS Hello and a package installer. In addition, a “Handheld Edition” is available which, similar to Steam Deck OS, can be used on corresponding devices. [4] [5]
Proton is intended for gaming on Linux, in addition to individual solutions. In conjunction with the Steam platform, the software offers a large number of games originally developed for Windows in Linux environments. [6] [7] [8]
According to PC Games Hardware, CachyOS already achieved a 2.54 percent share of the Linux market on Steam in its first year. [9] In July 2025, it became the most popular distribution on DistroWatch. [10] [11] [12]
