VCU was founded in 1838 as the medical department of Hampden–Sydney College, becoming the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. In 1968, the Virginia General Assembly merged MCV with the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, to create Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2018, more than 31,000 students pursue 217 degree and certificate programs through VCU's 11 schools and three colleges. Jaime Alfonso Escalante Gutiérrez was a Bolivian-American educator known for teaching students calculus from 1974 to 1991 at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. Escalante was the subject of the 1988 film Stand and Deliver, in which he is portrayed by Edward James Olmos.

Sleep Train Arena, originally ARCO Arena and later Power Balance Pavilion, is a defunct indoor arena located in Sacramento, California, United States. Opened in 1988, it was the home of the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1988 to 2016. It hosted nearly 200 spectator events each year. The arena is named for the Sleep Train, a chain of mattress and bed retailers based in Rocklin, California, that at the time of the agreement was a subsidiary of Mattress Firm, a Houston-based retailer that has since re-branded all Sleep Train stores as Mattress Firm. Several major entertainers have performed at the venue before its closure including Bruno Mars and Linkin Park.

As of December 2021, Raley's purchased Bashas' Supermarkets, doubling their store count and extending their reach into Arizona and New Mexico.
Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) is a private university with its main campus in Pomona, California, with an additional osteopathic medical school in Lebanon, Oregon. WesternU offers osteopathic medical, dental, optometry, and podiatry degrees along with nursing, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, and veterinary medicine. Drexel University Sacramento—DUS was a satellite campus of Drexel University, located in downtown Sacramento, California. It was in Old Sacramento, beside the Tower Bridge over the Sacramento River. Drexel is a not-for-profit, private, research university based in Pennsylvania, with three campuses in Philadelphia. The Sacramento campus was opened in 2009 and closed in 2015 with students enrolled at that time allowed to complete their studies.
California Northstate University College of Medicine (CNUCOM) is a private for-profit medical school located in Elk Grove, California and is one of the four colleges of California Northstate University, granting the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD). The college of medicine was approved by the WASC in August 2013 and gained preliminary accreditation in June 2015 and provisional accreditation in June 2019 by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
