Synopsis

The film tells the story of Silibil N' Brains, a rap duo who for three years pretended to be American in order to be taken seriously by the record industry and ended up touring with Eminem. [1]

James McAvoy was reported to be directing a film about faux-Californian rap duo, Silibil N' Brains, otherwise known as Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd from Dundee in Scotland, in October 2023. [2]

The film is produced by Guy J. Louthan of Ransom Films, and Danny Page of Homefront Productions. It is based on Bain’s autobiography Straight Outta Scotland and adapted by Archie Thomson. Samuel Bottomley and Séamus McLean Ross are set to play Boyd and Bain. McAvoy will also have a small role in the film. [3]

Silibil N' Brains were a Scottish hip-hop duo consisting of Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd. They are best known for masquerading as American rappers from California to secure a record deal, a story which formed the basis of Bain's 2010 memoir California Schemin' and was adapted into the documentary film The Great Hip Hop Hoax.

The Great Hip Hop Hoax is a documentary film by Jeanie Finlay about a Scottish hip-hop duo called Silibil N' Brains, who pretended to be Americans to secure a £250,000 record deal with Sony. The film premiered at South by Southwest and was later shown at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, before a national theatrical release in Scotland and broadcasts on BBC Two Scotland, BBC Four, and Danish station DR2. It was pitched at Sheffield Doc/Fest's MeetMarket in 2008.
