California Science and Engineering Fair

The California Science and Engineering Fair, previously known as the California State Science Fair, is a science fair held annually at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

The fair is fed by 28 regional science fairs, each of which is allocated a number of projects based on prior history of producing winning entries. The allocation in 2009 was 908 projects, an average of 24.7 projects per million population. [1]

Awards are given in several categories at both junior (grades 6–8) and senior (grades 8–12) levels. The awards are posted shortly after the fair ends each spring. [2] At the 2009 fair the major awards include the Patricia Beckman Project of the Year Award—David Zarrin of Redwood Middle School, Saratoga won the Junior Division ($5,000 award) and Anna K. Simpson of Patrick Henry Senior High School, San Diego won the Senior Division ($10,000). [3] There are also many special awards sponsored by various organizations, some with cash prizes. [4] An example of the special awards presented include the UCLA Brain Research Institute Award (given to Senior and Junior Divisions) that was recently awarded to Luke T. Anderson of De La Salle High School.

The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is an annual science fair in the United States, and is owned and administered by the Society for Science & the Public a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C.,. Each May, more than 1500 students from roughly 70 countries and territories compete in the fair for scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prizes, including one $75,000 and two $50,000 college scholarships. All prizes together amount to over $4,070,000. Two awards ceremonies are held including: Special Awards Organization Presentation and the Grand Awards Ceremony. The International Science and Engineering Fair was founded in 1950 by Science Service and was sponsored by the Intel Corporation from 1997 to 2019.. Starting in 2020, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals became the title sponsor for ISEF but this event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

National History Day is a non-profit organization based in College Park, Maryland that operates an annual project-based contest for students in grades 6-12. It has affiliates in all fifty states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, South Korea, China, South Asia, and Central America. It started as a local program in Cleveland, Ohio, headed by Dr. David Van Tassell, a history professor at Case Western Reserve University. It grew from 129 students in 1974 to over 500,000 students in 48 states in 1991, and 700,000 students and 40,000 teachers in 2001. Today more than half a million students enter through local contests. They construct entries as an individual or a group in one of five categories: Documentary, Exhibit, Paper, Performance or Website. Students then compete in a series of regional contests with top entries advancing to state/affiliate contests. The top two entries in each category and division are invited to compete at the National Contest.

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) is a statewide organization in Pennsylvania founded in 1934. The organization is open to all students of participating schools in grades 7 through 12. Students can participate in both a regional meet as well as a state meet at Penn State University. 1st Award winners from their regional meets are invited to compete at the state meet where they are given the opportunity present their projects again to win a wide range of awards like $8,000 Penn State scholarships, and other special awards.

Broadcom MASTERS, a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP), is a national science competition for U.S. middle school students. The Broadcom Foundation launched the competition in 2010 and pledged $6 million over the next 6 years. In 2014, approximately 6,000 middle school students were eligible for entry and 2,054 students completed and submitted an application.
