The Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust is an organization that offers scholarships to students from overseas and the Commonwealth (excluding the United Kingdom) who have been accepted for admission to the University of Cambridge in England. [1]

On 1 August 2013. the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust was merged to form "The Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust". The merged entity continues to provide financial support for international students on degree courses at the University of Cambridge.

The Trust's Patron is the Prince of Wales, and it is governed by a board of Trustees: [2]

Scholarships

The trust scholarships usually cover tuition fees with some including living and travel costs. All students, regardless of nationalities, are eligible for consideration of the scholarships. Scholarships are granted after the students have fulfilled the admissions requirements to the University of Cambridge. The types of scholarships include: [3]

Applicants are put forward by their respective colleges when admitted and only students who are in financial need will be considered. Every year, the Trust awards about 400 scholarships to international students to study at Cambridge. According to DAWN, [4] the country that topped the list of students securing the scholarships is China, followed by the US, and India. Scholars were named as "Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholar" in the past. Currently, "Cambridge International Scholar" and "Cambridge Trust Scholar" are used for the awardees.

Alumni

After many years since its formation, thousands of scholars have benefitted from the financial aid given by the trusts. The trust maintains a list of existing scholars and past scholars. It also provides a platform for these scholars to keep in touch and network with each other. [5] The trusts also hold social events for the scholars to meet and interact.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation established the Gates Cambridge Scholarships in 2000 with a $210 million donation to support outstanding graduate students' study at the University of Cambridge. The scholarship is one of the most competitive and prestigious in the world, with around 1.3% of applicants receiving an award in recent years.

The Harkness Fellowship is a program run by the Commonwealth Fund of New York City. This fellowship was established to reciprocate the Rhodes Scholarships and enable Fellows from several countries to spend time studying in the United States.

The Yale School of Management is the graduate business school of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The School awards the Master of Business Administration (MBA), MBA for Executives (EMBA), Master of Advanced Management (MAM), Master's Degree in Systemic Risk (SR), Master's Degree in Global Business & Society (GBS), Master's Degree in Asset Management (AM), and Ph.D. degrees, as well as joint degrees with nine other graduate programs at Yale University. The Thouron Award is a prestigious postgraduate scholarship established in 1960 by Sir John R.H. Thouron, K.B.E., and Esther du Pont Thouron. It was created to strengthen the "special relationship" between the United States and the United Kingdom through educational exchange between British universities and the University of Pennsylvania. Through the programme the Thourons sought to nourish and develop Anglo-American friendship by ensuring that, in the years to come, a growing number of the leading citizens of these two countries would have a thorough understanding of their trans-Atlantic neighbours. In the years since its founding, the Thouron Award has sponsored programs of graduate study for more than 650 fellows, known as Thouron Scholars.

The O'Reilly Foundation is a personal charitable trust set up in 1998 by media magnate, and former CEO of Heinz, Sir Anthony "Tony" O'Reilly. Its stated function is the funding of educational projects; the two main work areas in its active period were funding of capital developments at Irish colleges, and an annual post-graduate scholarship programme for young people normally resident in Ireland, with the aim of "supporting charitable endeavours for the betterment of Ireland and to promote excellence, global vision, community responsibility and leadership."

Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships are available for any students for doctoral study at St John's College at the University of Cambridge and for undergraduate studies at the university. The Scholarships are named in honor of Manmohan Singh, a former Prime Minister of India and a renowned economist. Singh graduated from St John's College with a First in Economics in 1957, went on to earn a DPhil from the University of Oxford in 1962, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Cambridge in 2006.

Kennedy Scholarships provide full funding for up to ten British post-graduate students to study at either Harvard University or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Susan Hockfield, the sixteenth president of MIT, described the scholarship program as a way to "offer exceptional students unique opportunities to broaden their intellectual and personal horizons, in ways that are more important than ever in an era defined by global interaction.". In 2007, 163 applications were received, of which 10 were ultimately selected, for an acceptance rate of 6.1%.

The Yenching Academy is a postgraduate college of Peking University (PKU), located in Beijing, China. It hosts the Yenching Scholarship, a fully funded prestigious global scholarship program, designed "to cultivate leaders who will advocate for global progress and cultural understanding." The academy offers Yenching Scholars, selected annually from around the world, with full scholarships for one or two years of study leading to a master's degree from Peking University.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars is an international graduate-level scholarship program for study at Stanford University. Established in 2016, the program prepares students to take leadership roles in finding creative solutions to complex global issues. Scholars receive full funding to pursue any graduate degree at Stanford and have additional opportunities for leadership training, mentorship, and experiential learning across multiple disciplines.

In 2016 the Women's Engineering Society (WES), in collaboration with the Daily Telegraph, produced an inaugural list of the United Kingdom's Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering, which was published on National Women in Engineering Day on 23 June 2016. The event was so successful it became an annual celebration. The list was instigated by Dawn Bonfield MBE, then Chief Executive of the Women's Engineering Society. In 2019, WES ended its collaboration with the Daily Telegraph and started a new collaboration with The Guardian newspaper.

The Charles and Julia Henry Fellowships were initiated in 1930 and are one of the most competitive and prestigious scholarships in the world. The fellowship funds four full-time post-graduate students every year at Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. Two students from any British university are funded to study in the US, and two American students from Harvard and Yale are funded to study at Cambridge and Oxford.

The 2020 New Year Honours are appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by citizens of those countries. The New Year Honours are awarded as part of the New Year celebrations at the start of January and were officially announced in The London Gazette on 27 December 2019. Australia, an independent Realm, has a separate honours system and its first honours of the year, the 2020 Australia Day Honours, coincide with Australia Day on 26 January.
