Canadian International Organ Competition

The Canadian International Organ Competition (CIOC) (French : Concours international d'orgue du Canada) is an organisation devoted to the promotion of organ music. It works in collaboration with various organisations of the organ world to fulfill its mission. In Montreal every three years, the CIOC presents an international competition open to organists of all nationalities under 35 years of age. Sixteen organ virtuosi perform for a jury of nine internationally renowned specialists and compete for major awards. In addition to the prize money ($30,000 for the winner, $70,000 total [1] ) the top prizewinner receives a three-year representation agreement for USA and Canada, a CD recording, recitals and career coaching.

The CIOC first edition took place from October 8–19, 2008, the second edition from October 5–16, 2011 in Montreal, the third from October 7–19, 2014 and the fourth edition from October 6–21, 2017.

History

Since 1997, the McGill Summer Organ Academy has welcomed some of the world's foremost organists to teach and perform. The closure of the Calgary International Organ Competition in 2002 offered an opportunity for Montreal fill the void with its own competition. By 2006, a group of music lovers had gathered around John Grew, McGill University Organist, to create the CIOC.

Juries

Prior to the beginning of each competition, the CIOC Board of Directors approves the jury selected by CIOC's Artistic Director John Grew. These jurors hold sole responsibility for choosing which competitors will receive the CIOC awards. Jurors are chosen from a wide range of international artists, based on their work and excellent reputations. The competition jury of nine is presided over by John Grew. [2]

2008 edition

From 58 applicants from 17 countries, 16 competitors representing 11 countries were selected by a Preliminary Jury. Over 7,000 people attended the CIOC 40-event programme. There was no charge for entry to the rounds of competition.

The inaugural Canadian International Organ Competition was won by Frédéric Champion from France. Frédéric Champion acted as the organisation's ambassador during concert tours he has given in North America, Europe and Asia till the next winner was declared in 2011.

2014 edition

From 42 applicants, including 25 men and 17 women, 16 were invited to Montreal. The 2014 Competition took place in Montreal from October 7–19, 2014 in churches such as Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Notre-Dame Basilica; the CIOC winners played on the Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique organ of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal in the Maison Symphonique. In total almost 10 000 came to CIOC events, including 40 concerts, competition rounds and events.

2017 edition

20 young talents were invited to play in Montreal at the 2017 edition. The 2017 Competition took place in Montreal from October 6–21, 2017 in at Church of the Immaculate Conception, Church of St-Jean-Baptiste and Notre-Dame Basilica.

André Edouard Antoine Marie Fleury was a French composer, pianist, organist, and pedagogue.

Dong-Ill Shin won first prize in the national competition for piano sponsored by the Korean Times at the age of ten. When he was eleven he made his debut with the Pusan Philharmonic Orchestra playing Mozart's Concerto in d minor No. 20. Attracted by J.S. Bach's Music and the orchestra-like colors produced by the organ, he began his studies with Dr. Sun-woo Cho at the age of 14. Later at Yonsei University in Seoul he studied with Dr. Tong-soon Kwak and completed his Bachelor of Music degree in 1997. He then studied in France with Jean Boyer and received the Diplome Nationale Superieur de Musique from the Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique de Lyon in Organ, Harmony, Fugue, Analysis, Improvisation & Basso-Continuo. His dissertation at the Conservatoire was on the study of Tabulatura Nava by Samuel Scheidt which focused on J.P. Sweelinck's influences. His studies continued with Olivier Latry and Michel Bouvard at the Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique de Paris in the prestigious Cycle de Perfectionnement program, which is the highest program in the French National Conservatory system. He also undertook private studies with Mme. Marie-Claire Alain for Organ and Mme. Françoise Marmim for Harpsichord. During his years of study in France he won several scholarships including awards from the Darazzi Foundation, the Meyer Foundation and Mécèn de Société Générale. In 2004 he completed his Artist Diploma at The Boston Conservatory on a full scholarship studying with James David Christie.

Monique Gendron is a Canadian organist of international renown. She won first prize at the St Albans International Organ Festival in England and at the Grand Prix of Chartes in France. She has recorded sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel with oboist Bernard Jean and has performed in concert series presented by Les Amis de l'orgue de Québec. She has performed in concerts and recitals throughout North America and Europe. She currently teaches on the faculties at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Hull and the Académie de musique du Québec.

Narine Simonian is one of the most baroque French organists, as well as a pianist, musical director and producer of operas, born in Gyumri, Armenia. Nariné is also an organist, an harpsichord and pianoforte player as well as a pianist, mainly specializing in baroque genre, with a strong emphasis on Johann Sebastian Bach.

Helga Schauerte-Maubouet Franco-German musician

Helga Schauerte-Maubouet is a German-French organist, woman writer and editor of music. Schauerte has recorded the complete organ works of Jehan Alain, Dietrich Buxtehude, and J. S. Bach, portraits of Buttstett, Corrette, Reger, Boëllmann, Dubois and Langlais, comprising some thirty recordings). She works as a performing artist in Europe and throughout the USA, and is Organist of the German Lutheran Church in Paris, and teaches at the Paris Conservatory Nadia et Lili Boulanger. She is also lecturer and jury member for international organ competitions.

Johann Vexo French organist
