The Cankar Award (Slovene : Cankarjeva nagrada) is a literary award established in 2019 by the Slovenian PEN, Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the University of Ljubljana. It is named after Ivan Cankar, Slovene writer, playwright, essayist, poet, and political activist. The first award was given in 2020. The Cankar Award honours the best original literary work in Slovenia, celebrating genres in which Ivan Cankar excelled. [1] The award initially consisted of a €5,000 prize and a diploma. [1] In 2024 the amount was increased to €7,000 . [2]
The award was established in 2019 with the firs one given in 2020 in Vrhnika. The inaugural nominees for the 2020 award were Vinko Möderndorfer, Sebastijan Pregelj, Simona Semenič and Brane Senegačnik. [3] The 2023 nominees were Katja Gorečan, Adriana Kuči, Mojca Kumerdej, Mirana Likar and Lado Kralj. [4]

Ivan Cankar was a Slovene writer, playwright, essayist, poet, and political activist. Together with Oton Župančič, Dragotin Kette, and Josip Murn, he is considered as the beginner of modernism in Slovene literature. He is regarded as the greatest writer in Slovene, and has sometimes been compared to Franz Kafka and James Joyce.
Radiotelevizija Slovenija – usually abbreviated to RTV Slovenija – is Slovenia's national public broadcasting organization.
Slovenia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 29 times since its debut in 1993, having hosted a qualification round in Ljubljana for seven countries due to the influx of new nations wishing to join the contest. The Slovenian participant broadcaster in the contest is Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTVSLO).
Oton Župančič was a Slovene poet, translator, and playwright. He is regarded, alongside Ivan Cankar, Dragotin Kette and Josip Murn, as the beginner of modernism in Slovene literature. In the period following World War I, Župančič was frequently regarded as the greatest Slovenian poet after Prešeren, but in the last forty years his influence has been declining and his poetry has lost much of its initial appeal.
Aleš Šteger is a Slovene poet, writer, translator and editor. Aleš belongs to a generation of writers that started to publish right after the fall of Yugoslavia. His first poetry collection Šahovnice ur (1995) was sold out in three weeks after publication and indicated a new generation of Slovenian artists and writers.

Slovenia was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 with the song "Tih deževen dan", composed by Cole Moretti, with lyrics by Tomaž Kosec, and performed by 1X Band. The Slovene participating broadcaster, Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTVSLO), held a national final in order to select its entry for the contest. This was the first-ever entry from independent Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Rožanc Award is a literary award in Slovenia awarded each year for the best collection of essays in Slovene. It has been bestowed since 1993. It is named after the author, playwright and journalist Marjan Rožanc.
The Levstik Award is a literary award in Slovenia awarded for achievements in children's literature. It has been bestowed since 1949 by the Mladinska Knjiga Publishing House, making it the first literary award established by a Slovene publishing house after the Second World War. It includes a prize for original works of literature, original illustrations, and non-fiction books for children.
