The Cardinal Connection is the official student newspaper of Wheeling Jesuit University. It is published biweekly; over the course of the academic calendar this works out to six times per semester.
Student journalism at then-Wheeling College began on November 22, 1955 with the first publication of The Spokesman. [1] The paper ceased publication in 1980, and began again as Nova in 1982. The newspaper continued under this name until 1989, when the name switched back to The Spokesman. [2] In 1997, the paper adopted the name Cardinal Connection.
The Cardinal Connection began publishing six times per semester during the 2009-2010 school year, and in 2010-2011, adopted a 12 page, four section format. The paper is managed by an administrative moderator, an editor-in-chief, and section editors.
During the 2010-2011 school year, the Cardinal Connection published four sections. A fifth was added for the 2011-2012 school year.
The News section consists of the front page and three other pages of campus and city news. Frequent topics include food service, student government, and Campus Activities Board programming.
Arts & Living is dedicated to popular trends, student creative work, and reviews of music, films, and literature. The section also includes a spotlight on one Academic Resource Center tutor in every issue.
Ask a Student is a feature in every issue in which one student from each class answers a question - usually pertaining to campus life - and is photographed.
Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Cardinal Connection includes a section related to the university's Jesuit identity. Topics for the section include campus ministry and service work on campus and in the community.
The sports section covers Wheeling Jesuit University's athletic programs. A "Senior Spotlight" is included in every issue and profiles one of WJU's senior athletes. In addition, the sports section covers the careers of alumni who participated in sports while at WJU.
The opinion section features student analysis of university affairs and current events. Additionally, the opinion section usually includes a cartoon.
Point/Counterpoint is included in every issue of the paper. In it, two students present opposing arguments to the same question, which can range from university issues to popular culture.
The Cardinal Connection is open to all WJU students regardless of major. Students who contribute to at least one issue during a semester are listed as staff members in their byline; those who are submitting a guest column or writing for a class are considered guest contributors. The editor-in-chief and section editors are chosen through an application process.
Wheeling University is a private Roman Catholic university in Wheeling, West Virginia. It was founded as Wheeling College in 1954 by the Society of Jesus and was a Jesuit institution until 2019. Wheeling University competes in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as a member of the Mountain East Conference.
The South End is the official student newspaper of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, published in print and online. It was founded in 1967, and its publication is funded partly from university funds and partly from advertising revenues. It is distributed free of charge.
The Technique, also known as the "'Nique", is the official student newspaper of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, and has referred to itself as "the South's liveliest college newspaper" since 1945. As of the fall semester of 2011, the Technique has a weekly circulation of 10,000, distributed to numerous locations on the Georgia Tech campus and a handful of locations in the surrounding area. The first issue of the Technique was published on November 17, 1911, and the paper has printed continuously since its founding. The paper publishes weekly throughout the regular school year and primarily covers news, events and issues specific to the Georgia Tech community. In 2004 it was one of 25 collegiate newspapers to receive the Pacemaker award from the Associated Collegiate Press.
The Daily Cardinal is a student newspaper that serves the University of Wisconsin–Madison community. One of the oldest student newspapers in the country, it began publishing on Monday, April 4, 1892. The newspaper is financially and editorially independent of the university.
The Orion is the student newspaper of California State University, Chico and produces 32 issues every year, 16 each semester. Its offices are in the basement of Plumas Hall on the Chico State campus. It has won numerous state and national awards, including several National Pacemakers. Its name is taken from the constellation Orion, as the newspaper is meant to be a "hunter of truth."
The Hoya, founded in 1920, is the oldest and largest student newspaper of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., serving as the university’s newspaper of record. The Hoya is a student-run paper that prints every Friday and publishes online daily throughout the year, with a print circulation of 4,000 during the academic year. The newspaper has four main editorial sections: News, Opinion, Science, Sports and The Guide, a weekly arts and lifestyle magazine. It also publishes several annual special issues including a New Student Guide, a basketball preview and a semesterly fashion issue.
The Parthenon is the independent student newspaper of Marshall University based in Huntington, West Virginia. The paper began publication in 1898. It currently is published in print on Tuesdays with content added daily online. It is distributed for "free" on the Huntington and South Charleston campuses. The Parthenon is also published online. Student reporters change every semester and are instructed by the faculty adviser in a beat reporting class within the school of journalism. Editors, staff reporters and other staff change annually or every semester.
The State Press is the independent, student-operated news publication of Arizona State University. In August 2014, it became an all-digital publication. It published a free newspaper every weekday until January 2013, at which point its print distribution was reduced to once per week. The editorial board announced that ASU Student Media will begin to focus on "a host of new digital products and special print products."
The Medium a student newspaper in the United States. It is a student-run weekly satire and comedy publication at Rutgers University, the state university of New Jersey. Founded in 1970 as The Livingston Medium, it is the second largest newspaper in circulation at Rutgers University, after the official student newspaper, The Daily Targum. Referring to itself as the "Entertainment Weekly of Rutgers University", the more recent incarnations of The Medium focus on satirical and humorous articles based on current events, popular culture, and events on the Rutgers campuses. Since 1970, the newspaper has been headquartered on Livingston Campus.
The Indiana Daily Student (IDS) is an independent, student-run newspaper that has been published for the community of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, since 1867. The IDS is free and distributed throughout the campus and city.
The University Register (UR) is the official campus newspaper of the University of Minnesota Morris, and is published bi-weekly during the academic year. It primarily serves the University of Minnesota Morris campus and the greater Morris community. The paper is entirely student-run, operating out of the basement of the school's Multi-Ethnic Resource Center, and distributes over 1,500 copies to the campus every Thursday night. A typical issue of The UR is between fourteen and eighteen pages long, and consists of five sections: News, Editorial, Arts & Entertainment, Variety, and a Feature.
The Central Florida Future was the independent weekly student newspaper of the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida. The Future was one of the largest student-run newspapers in the United States, with a circulation of 14,000 and readership of over 30,000. It was a member of the USA Today network.
The Guidon is the official student newspaper of Ateneo de Manila University. Published monthly between August and March, The Guidon is a member of the Ateneo's Confederation of Publications and is one of the founding members of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines, along with The Varsitarian of the University of Santo Tomas, The Philippine Collegian of the University of the Philippines Diliman, and The National of National University (Philippines). As of 2023, The Guidon is in its 94th year, with its editor-in-chief being Ryan Gabriel B. Suarez, its associate editor being Anna Margarita F. Pineda, its managing editor being Silas S. Chiew, and its design executive editor being Emmanuel Linus T. Evangelista.
Founded in 1920, the BG News is the student-run newspaper at Bowling Green State University, which is published Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters and weekly during the summer. It can be picked up at hundreds of locations on and off campus around Bowling Green, Ohio. The newspaper offices are located at The Michael & Sara Kuhlin Center and is advised by the Director of Student Publications. Past editors include: Maxwell Selby in 2013, Danae King in 2014, Cameron T. Robinson in 2015, Annie Furia in 2016 and Holly Shively in 2017.
Kitsch is a semesterly magazine produced by students of Cornell University. It prints feature journalism, fiction, opinions, art, and miscellaneous shorter pieces; one of its taglines reads: "Where fact and fiction meet." The relatively unrestricted scope of the publication ensures that any thought-provoking topic may be considered for a feature.
The Legacy is a student-run newspaper at Lindenwood University in the U.S. state of Missouri, which is published every Tuesday during the Fall and Spring semesters. The online version of The Legacy is hosted by College Publisher. In addition to viewing each week's stories and accessing an archive, readers can check for updates for breaking news. The newspaper offices are located at The Journalism Lab inside the Spellmann Campus Center and is advised by the Lindenwood University School of Communications.
Royal Purple is a student-run weekly newspaper at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater in Whitewater, Wisconsin. It publishes online every Monday throughout the academic year, as well as quarterly seasonal print issues at 75 locations across the campus, city and at the UW-Whitewater at Rock County extension.
The Wheeling Cardinals are the athletic teams that represent Wheeling University, located in Wheeling, West Virginia, in intercollegiate sports as a member of the Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) as a founding member since the 2013–14 academic year. The Cardinals previously competed in the defunct West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) from 1957–58 to 2012–13.
The Massachusetts Daily Collegian is an American daily newspaper founded in 1890, and the independently funded, student-operated newspaper of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Collegian is a non-profit funded entirely through advertising revenue and receives no funding from the university or from student fees. In 2018, the Collegian scaled back its print edition to one issue per month, with digital-only articles continuing to be released daily.
William Francis Troy, SJ was an American Jesuit, academic, and college administrator. He served as President of Wheeling College from 1959 to 1966.
