Carl Chang (born February 13, 1969) is an American entrepreneur, real estate investor, business executive, and former tennis coach. He founded the pizza chain Pieology, and is active in real estate investment businesses. He is the older brother and former coach of tennis star Michael Chang. [1]

Early life and education

Chang was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on February 13, 1969. [2] [ citation needed ]. In 1979, their family moved to La Costa, California, so they could play tennis year round. [3] He graduated from San Dieguito High School in Encinitas, California, in 1987. He attended the University of California, Berkeley and graduated in 1991. [3] [ citation needed ]

Career

Tennis career

As a junior tennis player, Chang was ranked in the top ten at his age group. [3] He beat Pete Sampras at junior events. [2] Following his graduation, Chang briefly joined the professional tennis tour. [4] After playing in a few events as a singles player as well as a doubles partner of his younger brother Michael, he decided not to continue and instead became Michael's coach in 1991 – a role he filled until Michael's retirement from the tour in 2003. [5] Carl Chang was named 'Coach of the Year' by Tennis magazine in 1996. [2]

Real estate

In 2005, Chang and his family started Redwood Real Estate, a joint venture with Seattle-based investment firm Sienna Group. [6] The company had a $500 million fund focusing on distressed housing. [6]

In 2010, Chang founded Kairos Investment Management Co LLC, a private equity firm focused on real estate transactions. [7] Chang serves as the company's CEO. [7]

Pieology

In 2011, Chang along with partner James Markham, founded Pieology, a fast casual pizza chain restaurant originally based in Fullerton, California. [2] In 2012, Markham left to start his own company, leaving Chang in charge of Pieology. [8]

Other activities

Chang is also the chair of the board of directors of the Los Angeles branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. [9]

Dunn Gardens in Seattle, Washington, is a privately owned 7.5-acre (3.0 ha) property composed of the remaining acreage of the estate of Arthur G. Dunn Sr., who bought the property in 1914 as a summer get-a-way for his family, and contracted the landscaping to the Olmsted Brothers. Upon his death, the property was inherited by his children. His son Edward B. Dunn provided for the care of his share of the estate in his will. A trust was created two years after his death to oversee the entire property. Dunn Gardens were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 15, 1994, and is open for special public events and docent-led guided tours April through July, and from September through October.

Founded in 2011 by Carl Chang, the brother of former tennis player Michael Chang, Pieology's mission is to "turn one of America's favorite food into an affordable and interactive experience". Pieology's main rivals are Blaze Pizza and MOD Pizza. By October 2018, Pieology had a single unit in Mexico plus approximately 140 units in 23 American states and territories with more than half of those restaurants located in the state of California.
