Carl Hession is an Irish composer, arranger and pianist. His background includes many elements of his education in both traditional and modern (including jazz) and classical music. [1]

Originally from Galway, Ireland, he participated in competitions at various Fleadhs throughout the country. He has All Ireland titles to his credit as a soloist and as a member of duets and trios with flute player Matt Molloy and accordion player Joe Burke. [1] He studied classical piano at University College Cork, where he completed a B. A. in music, specialising in keyboard improvisation. He then performed with violin virtuoso Stéphane Grappelli.

Hession played with the ceili band Shaskeen, with whom he recorded several albums, and with Paul Brock's band Moving Cloud. He also worked with traditional musician friends Frankie Gavin and Joe Derrane and jazz/blues singer Mary Coughlan. With Gavin he recorded The Full Score (TARA 4020). Gavin also played on Hession's album Ceol Inne Ceol Inniu - Old Time New Time, along with Jackie Daly, Steve Cooney, Kevin Crawford and others. He also made recordings with jazz guitarist Louis Stewart. [1] [2]

For several years he was part of the Rhythm of the Dance team with the National Dance Company of Ireland. [1]

Hession has written and arranged compositions for a number of orchestras and ensembles and collaborated with Aidan O'Carroll on the album Songs My Mother Taught Me.[ citation needed ]

Hession was a music teacher at various schools in Galway County, including Coláiste Iognáid, Galway, [3] and most recently at Yeats College Galway, after which he commenced his retirement.[ citation needed ]

De Dannan is an Irish folk music group. It was formed in 1975 by Frankie Gavin (fiddle), Alec Finn, Johnny "Ringo" McDonagh (bodhrán) and Charlie Piggott (banjo) as a result of sessions in Hughes's Pub in Spiddal, County Galway, Ireland, with Dolores Keane (vocals) subsequently being invited to join the band. The fiddler Mickey Finn (1951–1987) is also acknowledged to have been a founder member.

Shaskeen Traditional Band is still performing as of 2020 and are at present performing concerts throughout Ireland. The band celebrate 40 years on the road in 2010. Paul Brock is an Irish button accordionist born in Athlone now residing in Ennis. In May 1989, Brock co-founded the group Moving Cloud with fiddle player, Manus McGuire. In 2001 he co-founded the new group The Brock McGuire Band also with Manus McGuire. In 2004, Brock was voted Best Male Musician by the Irish American News. His recent album Humdinger with fellow band member Enda Scahill was voted Irish Music Album of The Year by the Irish Times and has been released by Compass Records.

Maeve Donnelly is one of the top Irish traditional fiddle players known for her unique style within the traditional Irish music genre.
