Carlos Coelho (born 20 May 1960 in Lisbon) is a Portuguese politician and Member of the European Parliament for the Social Democratic Party People's Party coalition; [1] part of the European People's PartyEuropean Democrats group.

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with an estimated population of 505,526 within its administrative limits in an area of 100.05 km2. Its urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.8 million people, being the 11th-most populous urban area in the European Union. About 3 million people live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, including the Portuguese Riviera,. It is mainland Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. The westernmost areas of its metro area form the westernmost point of Continental Europe, which is known as Cabo da Roca, located in the Sintra Mountains.

From 11 July 2000 to 6 September 2001, Coelho served as the chairman of the Temporary Committee on the ECHELON Interception System. [2]

The Temporary Committee on the ECHELON Interception System was a Committee of the European Parliament that was set up in 2000 to investigate the global surveillance network ECHELON. The committee issued its final report in 2001.

From 26 January 2006 to 14 February 2007, Coelho was chairman of the Temporary Committee on the alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners. [2] In addition to his committee assignments, he is a member of the European Parliament Intergroup on Children’s Rights [3] and of the European Parliament Intergroup on Disability, Member. [4]

The Temporary Committee on the alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners, widely referred to as the CIA committee, was a Committee of the European Parliament that was set up in 2006 to investigate the alleged role of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in the extraordinary rendition of terrorists. The chairman of the committee was Carlos Coelho.
